I was just going on with the day, listening to the radio. Just like the psychopath I was, I poured the milk into the bowl and then the cereal. Even though I wasn't going to die due to some chemical reaction in my stomach by doing that, my stepmother always made a fuss. Yep, I said "stepmother", My younger stepsiblings always bullied me, by saying that I was picked up from a Dumpster. But, I knew better than listening to some kids who weren't even born back then.
Just when I was about to put a spoon full of delicious cereal into my mouth. Bam! a rock flew straight into my open window and into my cereal. I said nothing, closed the window and got another bowl of cereal. By this time you would have guessed that I was not allowed to yell at my stepbrothers, that I ate in my bedroom and I was just not the favourite. Why was I not the favourite? because I was a girl and... well, I was a nigger or a black person.
Now, my dad wasn't a bad person after all. But, he was not at home most of the time. He did although like to talk privately with me and not be seen by anyone. Again that was because I was black and the rest of my family was white. I probably got my colour from my actual mother, about whom my dad never liked to talk about. He just said that my mom left us when I was born.
But, that didn't stop me from making friends. The girls paid good attention to me and they often told me that Black People are Beautiful! Oh, sorry where are my manners! I am Ode, a fifteen-year-old girl with thick black hair and a fierce face. Now let's catch up with my friends.
'Hi, Katie!'
'Hi, Ods! Long time no see mate.'
Pause. Katie is a girl of my age and she's just obsessed with calling me over for sleepovers. Rewind.
'Girl, you were the last person I saw before sleeping yesterday. Jeez! Girl you need to stop face timing me.'
She, of course, didn't care and waved the suggestion aside.
'Anyway, when are you going to see your dad next.'
'Hopefully this evening, I'm tired of my stepmom.'
'OoOo I feel you will get to meet him earlier. He's just so charming, you see.'
'Are you seriously having a crush on my father, Again!'
She was my best friend, so, no matter how much I frown at her, she'd always crack a joke and I'll cool down. Just because the girls acted decently, or I should say that they didn't bully me, didn't mean that the boys acted nice. In the first period, a new student, Rand, threw a crumpled piece of paper on my head. I opened it to expect something nice because he was new, but he wrote that "Ode is a fat loser". Well, a little tip I'll give you, Never Mess With Me! I might look like a kid who will ignore but I'm just restricted to beating up my stepbrothers.
'Rand, why do you think I'll not beat you up.'
'Because you are a girl, Duh! I anyways don't have to...'
I didn't wait to listen to the rest of it. I punched him in the face. Oh! he fell off the seat, next thing I knew, I was in the principal's office and my stepmom was called.
'Madam, your child has some anger issues, may I ask why?'
'I'm so sorry Principal I'll make sure this doesn't happen again.'
'Madam, didn't you say that last time?'
'Well, I mean it this time.'
'Just because you are a beautiful woman I will forgive you, and your little demon.', he gave a creepy smile to me.
Luckily, my stepmom never yelled at me or raised her hand. She just simply said "Why are you being a disappointment Ode? I know you can do better" and then she would leave me at the school gate and walk back home. That's how messed up my life was.
I was walking back home after school, with Katie, but, suddenly a giant... I dunno... a Machete flew past me, it was an inch away from my nose. I fell on my back. I turned around and saw a man. A big man with long hair tied in a ponytail, wearing a black vest with knives and blades attached to it. Katie was terrified.
'Dude! Is this a joke? We could have died there.'
The guy threw another weapon, this time it was a blade.
'I'll take that as a no. We have to run.'
We ran from the next lane to the "Shara Goldberg cafe" I found a car near the next building. A car was probably the fastest vehicle I could find. I looked behind, the man had some extra company, and that was undoubtedly bad. But he was a little behind. I broke a window to open the door. the fool had luckily left the car keys, or else I would have certainly died. I twisted the keys, a loud vroom sound came from the engine. It was a Lincon. That guy must have learnt after that, to Never leave the keys of an Expensive car in the car itself! I hit the accelerator and it drove.
The machete dude and his friends found a motorbike. That was bad news.
'Ode you know how to drive?'
'I got to say... I don't.'
'Is this a good time to say that they are only five metres away from the car!'
'How much is five metres?'
'Really freaking close! Oh My God, I'd rather die in the hands of a mafia, blade, machete, killer, dude than in hands of my own friend, who is...'
'Trying to focus!'
'No! who is driving without a licence.'
A machete went cutting through the roof of our borrowed car. The backglass shattered and the tail light was on fire.'
'Do you know, if the diesel filling hole catches fire, the whole car can explode?.'
'I am not dying in hands of this dude! certainly not!'
I made a sharp right and the car was spinning. I decided that the car will explode but not kill us, instead, it'll kill them.
'Open your door, when I say jump you jump out of the car, Ok!'
'Alright!'
'Three... Two... One! Jump.'
Talk about perfect timing! Just as we got out. Boom! the car exploded. The fire spread quickly with the leak of diesel. Katie couldn't believe what she saw. She looked at me with concern.
'Are you sure that was not just a prank, cuz if it was then this is NOT FUNNY!'
'I don't know, as the blades felt little too sharp and too close for comfort.'
'Let's just get out of here lest they are still alive... even though that is practically impossible.'
'Right.'
We went around the Shopping Center and found a huge park. I assumed it was for a carnival. So, we went in it to see around as I knew the whole neighbourhood and I had never seen this one before. Yeah! I knew we were supposed to go back home but our excuses are really good so even if we came back after One day then also there would be no evidence to prove us wrong. I know I'm wicked without a doubt.
As we explored the park we came across an old homeless man asking for money. You might be thinking what is so special about the man. Well he was wearing a tuxedo and he looked tidy, yet he was sitting on the ground begging for a dollar. He was holding a sign which said "A dollar would help". Katie looked at me.
'Shall we ask the man why he wants a dollar?', she said that pulling out a dollar from her shirt pocket.
'But, didn't you get that to get coffee for yourself.'
'I did, but it feels odd that a well dressed and tidy man is sitting on the mud.'
'Ok! Let's check out why he wants a dollar for.'
We went towards the man and as soon as we took a step towards him he turned in our direction. I had one look at his eyes and I had an indistinctive dislike of him as his eyes had so much sorrow that it looked like he had no hope left in him and something had drained his confidence. I felt just the way I feel when I think about why my actual mother left me. He looked insecure and I wanted to run away but that would make me look like a juvenile so I kept courage and went forward. What happened after that amazed me!
