Miguel
Mathias was gaping. And I turned into a statue. It wasn't until Harvey pulled slowly away from me that I noticed he was right there. Both Mathias and I turned to him. For another moment or two the awkward staring went on since none of our brains were capable of functioning. What's with that? Stupid brain, always going offline when we need it the most.
“Holy fuck.” Mathias said, and I swear to God he if he says that again, I'm cutting our friendship.
“You said that already.” I told him.
His wide, surprised eyes focused on me. “What the heck else am I supposed to say? You were literally full on making out,” he points between us. “With a professor who is also a guy with a dick! Behind my back! It's basically like you were cheating on me or something!”
Which part of that makes sense? His logic never ceases to surprise me. Forget cutting friendship, I'm just going to sell him off to human trafficking.
“I'm gay.” I said, staring right at Mathias.
“No shit, Sherlock!” He replied.
“I didn't mean to go behind your back.”
“Oh my god! That's exactly what all the cheaters say.”
Why do I even bother? I should have known that this was how coming out to him was going to end up being. Why did I ever expect him to say something that made sense? Or be sensible about it. This is so Mathias that I want to just punch him, accompanied by the desire to hug him. I don't know whether to be relieved or disappointed.
“I didn't fucking cheat on you. We aren't even a couple. Stop trying to make this situation more awkward than it is.”
“I know that, but we're literally best friends with no secrets! Oh Jesus, now I sound like a fucking kid.”
“You always sound like a fucking kid.”
“Fuck you, man.” Mathias groaned, like I was the one being stupid.
Harvey cleared his throat from beside me. “This is the worst coming out I've ever seen, and I really don't want this happening in my office.”
Mathias and I looked at him confused. And then at each other. That's when Harvey said, “Both of you idiots. Get. Out.”
I immediately moved forward and grabbed Mathias, then dragging him out of Harvey's office. This was a conversation that was due for a long time and needed to be between the two of us. As much as having Harvey next to me would be good, that just wouldn't do. I looked over to Mathias trying to figure out what to say. We walked the corridors in silence for a while. But of course, Mathias is incapable of shutting up.
“You were running off to his place all this time?” He asked.
“Yes.”
“You were sleeping with him?”
I glared at him. “No. We were playing Legos.”
Mathias rolled his eyes. “Did you like magically realize you're gay after playing Legos with Harvey?”
“Jesus Christ. No.”
“So when? When did you know?”
I swallowed. I knew he was going to ask me this, and I wouldn't lie. I promised myself that I wouldn't lie. “Since I was 15.”
Mathias stopped walking. I slowly turned and faced him. He was staring at me with utter shock. “What?”
“I figured it out a long time ago.”
