Sally was in pain, her mind was in agony. Her muscles seemed to ache, she felt sick, she felt like dying. Today was supposed to be a merry day for her, she was meeting her lover, the Greek god of the sea, storms and earthquakes.
The last few months had been the best of her life, she had met this strange but alluring man on the beach. She was just a lonely 20 year old, living alone since her mother had died in a car crash two years prior. Her father had left when she was young, supposedly after winning a lot of money from somewhere and running away to enjoy his life without his family which he considered a burden.
Living on her own had been tough for Sally. She always had wanted to be a writer but after her mother's death, she quickly realised that she could either pursue being a writer or rather stop herself from becoming homeless. Having no other choice, Sally took up work at a candy store near her small rented apartment. The job required hard work but payed really less, barely enough for her to afford food and her rent. Sally wasn't really sure what she wanted to do in life after that, she couldn't save enough money with her job and to top it off she barely had any friends. Life was not going well for Sally.
Wanting a new change in her life, she had accepted when the strange man had asked to take her out to a café. One date turned to two, and two turned to many and Sally had finally realised... she had fallen hard for this man. He seemed like the perfect man to her, he was kind, caring and his good looks certainly did not hurt. Sally let him into her life and gave him her love and her body. That was when he told her who he was, a Greek god.
Sally remembered that day, she was making sandwiches for them when he told her. She was shocked and felt betrayed at first but then slowly understood his reason to hide the truth from her to keep her safe. She slowly got used to the fact and their love life returned to blooming. Sally felt safe around Poseidon, she experienced feelings that she had never experienced in her life.. the love and intimacy shared between two lovers. That is.. until today.. today her lover gave her two pieces of information that were equally devasting and shattered her life.
She had heard from people about experiences of horrible revelations that took away their will to live, till now she couldn't really relate to them. But now.. now she truly understand what it felt like to have your entire world snatched away from you with a single sentence. Poseidon revealed to her that he couldn't see her anymore because of the ancient laws finally catching up to him and Zeus getting suspicious of him for having relations with a mortal. As if that wasn't enough he also revealed that Sally was infertile, she could never produce a baby of her own. This was the breaking point for Sally. She was left without her lover and without the chance to ever have a child of her own. Although she was still young, Sally had seen the love shine through eyes of other women when they looked at their beloved children. She couldn't have that. She didn't want to live anymore, she wanted to die, the pain was too much. She didn't fear death anymore, it seemed like a mercy to her, a way to escape this pain that was suffocating her. Hitting the accelerator again, going at speeds one should never drive at, especially in such weather but Sally didn't care anymore.
Her mother had taught her, never to give up in life, never to be a quitter but Sally was not thinking rationally. She could just think about all her memories with Poseidon which were now blurring and changing from the man she loved dearly to the man who used her and left her. They were like a knife, stabbing her repeatedly in her chest.
How easy it would be to just end her suffering? A little swerve to the steering wheel and she her car will slam straight into a tree on the side of the road. No one would miss her, no one would remember her.
But before she could take actions on her thoughts, she noticed something lying in the middle of the road. Knowing that she was driving on an isolated road with no one around and in such bad weather, it could easily be a trap set out by thugs to stop oncoming cars and loot them. But did it even matter to Sally anymore? No..
She slammed the brakes, the car skidding and stopping. She quickly got out of the car, unsure if she hit something or worse, hurt someone. She didn't want to add someone's death also on the painful list of things that were tormenting her mentally.
She was relieved to find she didn't hit whatever was lying on the road, her car had stopped a few feet before it. But.. when she got a look at what, well who was lying on the road, she gasped. It was a small baby, who looked no more than around a year old. But that wasn't what drew out her gasp. It was the fact that that the poor soul had all his limbs and his neck twisted in weird directions, as if he had just fallen from the skies and his poor little body had taken the full impact of the fall. When Sally went a little closer, she saw that his eyes were closed. She rushed to him and was a little relieved to find a faint heartbeat. She decided that she would take the baby to a hospital. Even though internally she was going through hell, she couldn't let an innocent soul die.
She took the baby in her arms carefully without trying to cause more damage to his already battered body, which was really tough as she could feel all his bones dangling which indicated that they were broken. After picking him up though, she noticed a necklace of sorts with a weird symbol on it lying next to the spot where he had been lying. It was probably the object that shined and caught her eye. But she didn't have much time to spare for the necklace so she just snatched it from the ground and ran back to her car where she carefully put the baby in the back seats and after ensuring that he wouldn't go tumbling while she drove, she started the car and started heading towards the nearest hospital.
Line Break
It was probably somewhere around 4 or 5 in the morning, but Sally didn't care about the time. There were a lot of things going through her mind but as she was thinking about them, suddenly one of the hospital staff came to her and informed her that the baby who is actually a boy, is now out of danger and may live but how was he able to survive after such grave injuries was still unexplainable and like a miracle to the doctors.
After hearing this news. Sally didn't know why but suddenly she felt a little hope which was locked somewhere deep in heart be freed. She thought that if such a little boy who couldn't even speak yet had managed to survive, then she also wouldn't give up. The police had told her that they couldn't find any cases of missing kids related to the boy and if he survived then he would probably be moved to an orphanage where if he was lucky he would get adopted. Knowing how his chances of adoption were really less due to the state of his health.
She made a decision, a decision that would change her entire life.. but for better or for worse?
If a little boy no older than a few months could survive through this, then why couldn't she? She would raise this boy as her own. Give her the love her father never gave her. He would be her purpose in life, he would be her mortal point and bind her down to her life. He would be her salvation. He would be her.. child.
On this day, Sally adopted and named the boy Perseus Jackson.
