WARNING ⚠️

Samuel's POV

"I'm being followed. I can feel it." I tell the boss.

As much as I hate to say it; to admit it, I've been having the feeling for weeks now.

"By who? Who would suspect anything if you didn't leave a trace?"

The spite is evident by tone. I've really done wrong this time. I decide to keep quiet. I mean, I have nothing to reply to that.

"I don't know who or how it got to this point, but fix it. You got that?"

"Yes boss." I nod immediately. Just few seconds pass by before my phone beeps, indicating I received a message.

"And who is that? Your new girlfriend or something?"

"No, boss. I don't have a girlfriend. Can't keep one when I have such tedious job. You should know that. It's Nancy. She texted me to come over. She apparently wants to speak with me. That's strange because we hardly cross paths these days or even in weeks." I explain, frowning; confused.

"Get to her house, hear what she has to say and do exactly that. Don't screw this up. While you're at it, find out whoever it is you claim is following you. You can't leave traces; especially ones that lead to me. Understood?"

"Of course, boss." I reply like a boy toy, but within me, what I really want to say real bad is, 'calm down... Sheesh. It's not the end of the world.' I don't get why I'm still treated like a slave. I believe I've shown how worthy; trust worthy I am.

"Excuse me." I say, before exiting.

Nancy's POV

"Yeah, sure, come in, Samuel." I offer a wide smile, letting the door open wider.

"Thank you... Uhm, so to what do I owe this invite?" He chuckles uneasily.

"Would you like something to drink or should I make this short?" I ask, incurious.

"Uh... Not sure exactly what it is you want to tell me, boss." He itches the back of his neck.

I nod slowly. "Short version it is then." I fold my arm, raising a very serious brow.

"You're fired."

Samuel sucks in a strangled breath, like he wasn't expecting that. I don't even know if I was expecting that myself. "What? Wh-why? What did I do? I didn't-- I swear I'm not the only accomplice. I was uh, I'm uh-- wait, why exactly are you firing me? What did I do exactly?" He cuts his rant off, but I can't help ignoring the 'im not the only accomplice' statement.

I stay relaxed, unmoved.

"Nancy, why're you firing me? What exactly did I do wrong? Tell me. I'm literally desperate now. Is this about what Adam told you? Shit! I was totally going to tell you, but I saw how busy you were with all the new changes; your new business with Nina and all... There was actually no time to say anything." He rushes.

I don't understand anything he's saying, so I further raise my brow, signalling him to explain more.

He sighs. "I uh-- I was uh, I was going to tell you that uh... That my family came to town, and that I was going to visit them very often. That's why I've been absent for weeks now. I didn't want to bother you, plus like I said, you were too busy."

I can't help being confused. What family is he talking about? The same one he said he had in Asaba? The one that was doing very fine? They suddenly came to Abuja and he didn't think to tell me like he always does?
