The Way Around

Part 1

The lock clicked behind the nanny as she bid Nick goodbye, he walked to the living room to see his son, Jace, on the couch watching some kind of super hero movie. He flopped down on the couch next to him and wrapped his arm around him
“Hey buddy, how was your day?”
Jace turned to face his dad “It was good,” he paused “the nanny left a minute ago” he said turning back to the screen.
Nick chuckled “I know bud” His phone rings, it’s Andy. Nick walked to the kitchen and answered.
“Hey man, whats up I just got home”
“So, I stopped by Julie’s place earlier to pick up some files and uh, he have a case” Andy explains.
“Oh, ok do you know where?” Nick asked, he turned to see Jace has switched the movie and was now laying on the ground, he chuckled to himself.
“Yeah but you ain’t gonna like it”
“Oh boy”
Andy paused and took a breath “Its in Germany”
Nick froze, if he went, he wouldn’t be able to just, drive home to his house and son when they were done, not to mention time zone changes. What if I don’t do this, just this once. He thought. But then Andy might get hurt and I wouldn’t have been able to protect him. He made up his mind.
“Alright, tell J I’ll do it, I just gotta talk to Addi but I’m sure she would be happy to spend more time with him then just her week”
“You do that man, I’ll call Julie”
“See ya” Nick said, hanging up. He sat down and put his head in his hands. Jace came into the kitchen and grasped his dads wrist gently, or, as gently as a 5 year old could.
“Daddy? Are you ok?”
“Yeah buddy, its just, I’m not gonna be around for a few weeks” he explained.
“But why not?” Jace whined, his eyes starting to water.
“I have to go do something with Uncle Andy, some grown up stuff, but you know what bud?”
“What?” Jace asked sniffing.
“Your mommy is gonna come over and hang out with you while I’m gone. Is that alright?”
“Mommy?”
“Yeah bud, shes gonna come stay here” Nick said, picking up a smiling Jace and carrying him up the stairs to bed.
