*This short story mentions murder and weapons*
The human mind is truly the scariest thing of all. It can create new worlds, control others if given the right tools, destroy itself and its user and even re-define the world we all think we live in. It can create memories that don't exist, it can delete old ones and it can even withhold information from the user itself.
Many believe they have found the way to unlock the brains "full potential". Like the brain belongs to them. What they don't understand is that it isn't them controlling the brain, but the brain controlling them.
Think about it. You don't control your heartbeats, your nerves and your reflexes. You think that it's possible to control anxiety, but in reality, we only learn how to co-exist with it. Why do you start thinking about that time 3 years ago when you accidentally said "Thanks, you too." to the cashier when they said, "Have a nice meal!". Because you don't control your brain, it controls you.
There are instances where the brain has detected that people are stressing so much that it starts destroying the brain, where the brain has shut down their nerve system, wherein some cases they became temporarily paralyzed.
Are you convinced yet that the human mind controls you and you not it? That you only follow what your mind tells you. Not totally convinced yet? Well, I believe you will be after I tell you this.
5 years ago they were doing some research about the human brain. They did all kinds of tests, but one thing didn't sit right with one of the researchers, so he did some own experiments. They say that he said he just wanted to know why we didn't use all of the brain at the same time and why some parts seemed more... closed off and limited than others. However, one day he came to work, almost behaving like a completely different person. He was charismatic, extroverted and carefree. When asked about why he was behaving so strange, he just laughed and called them crazy.
They later found out, after he had started killing off the entire lab staff, that somehow hes brain were kind of mutated, both brain-half's had fused together and the anatomy was all scrambled up.
Then it started spreading. Humans all around stared experiencing the same, almost being overtaken by their brains. The reason? The body had started creating this new hormone that let the brain take over, almost like a virus in a computer, only that the human's own self was the virus and the computer was isolating it to eventually eliminate. Those who weren't evolved enough got killed.
At first I was able to live with these people. They didn't notice me, maybe because I was quite young, but mature, or because of something else. However, when someone talked to me about how their host were a tough one and I looked visibly confused, even though it was for a millisecond, I had blown my cover and needed to run. I had been able to reach my parents sail boat and sailed away, not knowing where to go, not even trusting my own mind.
But I went south, knowing that I couldn't go much more north anyway, considering that we lived by the gulf of Bothnia. Sadly there wasn't much wind the first week, so I had to fish from the boat. I got taught that the fish here wasn't very good to eat while I grew up, but what choice did I have?
As I sat alone on my boat fishing and slowly sailing south all the way to Danmark, I started to hear a voice. I wasn't sure if it was the isolation, or something else. The first few days I ignored it, trying to focus since the ocean was going to become more difficult to sail, but eventually I started talking to it.
It was quite nice, having some company. But this voice knew things that I was uncertain off, things I had seen my parents do, but never fully learned myself. It told me how to survive and were to enter land, how to trick the others and when to get back. I slowly started to realise that this voice probably was one of them. But why didn't it take over or get me killed?
One day I asked it.
"You are still a child. Your mind can still be changed and it adapts very well. You can be something better already. The adults, they... didn't change. Instead they wanted the power, but not the responsibility. They neglected the younger, stuffing them with chemicals, slowly destroying generation after generation. So the adults needed saving from themselves. But some were just too far gone."
"But where are the kids then and why arn't you taking me there?"
"They are in schools, kindergartens, some even with their parents, just getting a lot more attention, not knowing that somethings wrong. But if I were to get you there you would just escape. I'm not fully separated from you. You see, when you are very young, you have a lot of imagination, almost living in another world than the adults. But as you grow your imagination lessens, this being because we become separate, instead of staying as one. The only grown ups that never fully separate are those who use a lot of imagination daily. Writers, artists, actors... You are on the older side, yes, but not fully grown yet. You can still be saved. You can still save me. And for that to happen, I don't need you there, where you will fight and escape, growing your hate. I need you to let me teach you and answer your questions."
