I eventually decided that I would do it but I spent the rest of my night thinking about how I was going to pay for the transportation. My dad would never help me in this kind of situation. He thinks that my dreams of becoming a pop star are childish and that I need to grow up. Him not being there for me has caused me to become a very independent person. I have been paying my phone bill since the age of sixteen when he took me off of his plan. The only way I could think about constantly having the money to get back and forth to this place is by getting another part-time job. I started searching the web for any open listings.
I came across this one store in the mall that no one goes to. It was called Grannies Place and it was run by someone named Margret Patel. She looked an older lady from the profile photo and seems to be at least seventy years old. I applied for the position that I was interested in and got a response almost right away. She invited me in for an interview the next day at eight in the morning. I accepted confidently and started to plan the rest of my night.
I closed my laptop and started to find an outfit that would be suitable for tomorrow. I found a nice pink button down top with black slack pants. I paired it with white shoes and a white headband. I set it out on my dresser so I wouldn't take long getting ready.
Before getting in the bed I headed to the shower to washed up and get the smell of grease and mustard out of my hair. The steaming fog to me was very relaxing even though it didn't last for that long. Before I knew it the once hot and steamy water was now freezing. My dad turned off the hot water every time I showered. He believes that I am the reason the water bill is so high even though whenever he came home drunk he would leave the water running all night.
It became so bad, that the tiles in his bathroom have water damage; they were very cracked because he had flooded his bathroom one night and refused to call a plumber. Even though it felt like ice being thrown at my bare body, the shower is one of the places I knew that I could escape from the world. I felt like I can be me without having to explain myself to everyone out there just like at the dance studio. I stepped out of the shower after ten minutes as my teeth chattered. It was cold in the house so the fact that I took a cold shower, didn't make it any better. I threw on a pair of warm fleece pants lined with pink fuzz, bundle myself up in a warm cozy sweater and went to bed.
I woke up around six in the morning and had gotten on the bus around seven so I could get to the interview at the agreed time. I didn't have to work today so the timing was perfect. The ride wasn't long I took me about an hour to get there because of the multiple stops it had to make. I didn't want to pay money for an uber because the round was trip would be more than what I originally paid taking the bus. The bus pulled into the stop across the street from the mall and I got off to head inside. I looked at the email and she said that her store was on the second floor of the building next to the hard candy store. I found it ironic how the hard candy store was right next to the granny store. Upon my entrance, I could smell the scents of warm vanilla and freshly baked cookies. The smell reminded me of back when my mom was still living. She would always bake some cookies when anyone was in a bad mood. I looked at the walls and I saw all of the little trinkets and pictures of families. I start to get emotional because it only reminds me of what I once had; what I hoped to have.
"OH you must be Abby!" A voice comes from around the counter.
"Yes I am hello how are you." I said as I extended my hand.
"I'm great thank you for asking." She stated as she shook my hand back. " You know you remind me so much of my granddaughter with your beautiful skin and dark curly hair. Ah, I haven't seen her in years." I could tell she was reminiscing about the past.
"Let's get right to the interview shall we?"
I nodded my head and followed her to her office in the back of the store.
"So why were you interested in working here?"
"It seems like a very comforting place of work and based on the reviews there has been nothing but good energy"
"Well I do try. It's not very easy running this store. I had help in the past but they all quit along the line. Occasionally there is this one handsome young man that comes and helps me out. I always offer him a job because of how much he does but he refuses every time."
"Do you have any experience with a cash register and how much can you lift."
"I have years of experience with a register and also costumer and retail services."
"Sounds great and when would you be able to start?"
"I could start right now at this very moment. I am free all day on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays."
"Well Abby you seem to be just the person we need. Welcome to the team."
"Thank you so much for the consideration. I promise to work very hard." I exclaimed with a huge smile on my face.
I couldn't believe it. After all these years of not seeing her, I found her. My one and only grandchild. I haven't seen her since her mom moved away with that terrible excuse of a man. She was so beautiful and had a heart-shaped face. She has narrow eyes and big puffy hair. Exactly just like her mother. They are both so determined to achieve what they want in life that they forget to ask for help along the way. I want to be there for my granddaughter, and I want her to see her succeed. I am going to do what it takes just to make her happy.
