Monday Morning,
8:05 a.m.
Every Monday morning comes with either the sound of an annoying alarm clock, a parent's screeching cry to throw you out of bed, or the touch of the early morning sun burning against your skin. And as a student, you rush to do whatever you ought to do without getting late. And a like one out of the thousand students in School, you could even skip breakfast or package a ham into your school bag.
Walking into the school compound, I felt someone grabbed my arm from behind. I jerked off a little frightened and noticed it was my best friend, Amber.
"Gosh, you frightened me!" I confessed with a little frown.
"Awwwwn... What were you thinking about looking like that?! Come on, it's Monday morning, not the end of your life. And perhaps... I can't wait to get all the gists about Friday's night!"
"Huh!" An heavy breath heaved out of my lips in frustration.
"And what is that about?" she turned to me.
"Friday night was Friday night, okay? The pageant was exciting but it's gone now." I can't complained instead of explaining.
"Why do I have a feeling you're hiding something from me." she whined and suddenly brought out a folded newspaper from her bag.
"What's this about?" I raised a slim eyebrow at the paper.
"Here it goes, let me read it out for you. Contestant 39; Sylvia Morrison, the first runner up of the mini pageant contest disappeared just before the results were being announced.- Spotlight News."
"What? I won?!" My lips quivered.
I snatched the newspaper from her with my eyes scrolling through it's lines. There was a picture of Meagan Robinson, crowned as the second runner up and Ember Christopher as the third.
"Wow, so I won?!" I felt an ocean of tears prickling in my eyes. It slowly split over lingering down my face to a different kind of emotion between the unexpected joy and shame welling up on me.
"Like seriously?! Everybody knows about you now. Didn't you watch it in Saturday morning new? They asked that you report to the media station for verification to receive your prices. I wanted to pay a visit but I didn't want to get called my your uncle. We should go after school hours... I head there's a trophy, golden made tiara and a sum of $5,000 it's literally going to change your life, right?"
She stopped by the disappointment on my face.
"What's it, Sylvie? Are you even listen to me?"
"I'm sorry, Amber but I can't do that right now."
"What? Why?!" She raised a slim eyebrow at me in curiosity.
"Collins would know... He would take it all! What if he uses me as his toy? What if he blackmails me or something. I just realize how insignificant I am to him. Look, I don't want! I can't do this now... Maybe later when I'm much older."
"Okay, okay... Take a chill pill. This shouldn't be as tough as you take it. You fucking won a trophy. You're already a beauty queen! Your pretty face is all over the fucking television and newspaper which is... an achievement! Isn't that your dream?!"
She frowned, studying my face as I tried to regain composure.
