That day had been less than uneventful. Only a few girls came in to grab the newest books to read for their club, but besides that, you could practically see the tumbleweeds rolling past. "Close up for me, 'kay?" Ian's boss called out to him. Ian nodded, smiling as his boss, who had started to walk out of the library. "Stay warm!" Ian called out as he was leaving. His boss smiled at him, stopping in his tracks, halfway out the door "Will do. And...Ian?" "Yes?" "Tomorrow I'd like to ask you something, remind me!" "Sure thing boss," Ian continued smiling softly, his heart fluttering just the slightest. "Please, call me Lucas," He replied, before fully leaving out into the winter cold. Ian couldn't help but grin. Was it a promotion? After these two years working here, would he get another promotion? Maybe...just maybe, it could be Lucas asking Ian out on a date. "Don't be so stupid, Ian," He mumbled, turning off the computer in front of him. "Probably just something about a new book shipment." Ian looked across the thousands of books on the shelves. Some old, some new. Others are falling apart, whilst others are properly holding the pages in place. Ian loved the library. But not just any library. He specifically loved this one. The way it reeked of cinnamon, due to the new intern a few years ago spilling cinnamon cookies all over the carpet. That new intern was Ian, and he wasn't as clumsy as he was two years ago at that bake sale. But, don't get me wrong, it isn't out of the ordinary to see Ian trip in midair. He loved the small fireplace in the corner, and the quietness of it all when he got to lock it up. He loved to wander around in the library for an hour or so, and curl up in the corner by the fireplace and read his favorite book "Shattered Amongst the Stars". He has read that book more than thirteen times ever since he found it. Maybe he loved it so much because it doesn't matter what your sexuality, gender, or color is in this world. There's a beautiful dark skinned queen, who rules over all, and is an aromantic. While the hero of the story, Anthony, rescues everyone. Whether they are a boy, a girl, or neither, or both. However, the hero shows a liking towards the guys, more than the others. He could relate. Ian, just like the hero, also showed more of a liking towards boys than girls. Another reason for him to love it. However, as far as Ian knows, he's the only one who's ever read it. The only known copy of this book, rests in Ian's hands. He found it in the basement of the library, and when he once read it over, he couldn't help but take it. Ian has tried finding people who have read the book through the internet, but to no avail. Absolutely no one (according to the internet) has a clue. He doesn't want to ask his boss-I mean, Lucas about it. What would Lucas do if he found out? Probably be somewhat frustrated that Ian stole a book from the library. So, he keeps it hidden. Ian was planning on finishing the book for the fourteenth time tonight, but now, he was off in daydream land. "What if it is him asking me on a date? I wonder where we would go...I wonder if he likes to kiss on the first date," Ian said in a sing-song voice, swaying from side to side as he walked towards the books that still needed to be put on the shelf. Ian started putting the books in their place, alphabetically by author. "Maybe some sort of dinner place? Or...ooh! Maybe mini golf. Pretend I have no idea how to do it so he can put his arms around mine and 'help' me...Or a scary movie based on his favorite book! So then he can tell me when the scary parts are so I can close my eyes..." Ian kept thinking out loud, putting the books away in their places. His thoughts wander off from his mouth, making Ian fall into what he calls a "fantasy state" in which he lets his mind wander and ignores all his surroundings. His pace increased as he skipped around the library, hummed a joyful tune. More specifically, "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys. It was one of his favorite songs, and often hummed it around the library whilst working. After a few more books were put in their place, he began to sing out loud. "Wouldn't it be nice if we were older...~" Ian put the last book away. "Then we wouldn't have to wait so long...~" His last thing to do on his list was to curl up in the corner and read his beloved book. "And wouldn't it be nice to live together...~" He took a few skips towards the back room to get his bag. "In the kind of world that we belong...~" That was when it all started. The sound of a footstep Ian never took rang throughout the room. Ian stopped singing, his eyes darting around every inch of the library. He decided to see if someone was hiding, as some teenagers have done that before. "Hello?" No reply was heard. "If there's someone out there, the library's closed..." Same response as last time. Ian gulped, feeling the eeriness of the whole situation crawl up his body. "If you wanna... come back ...tomorrow," His voice was timid. "The times are from..." Ian's words were shaky, occasionally breaking."9:00 a.m. to..." He drifted. More footsteps. More muffled. More silence rolled in. 'It's probably nothing...' The tiny voice inside his head reasoned with him. 'Probably just a dare that some teenager decided to do...' Ian didn't want to deal with this right now, his good mood had faded slightly, and he didn't want some teenager ruining all of it. "Don't make a mess," He called out, snatching his bag from the back room and bolting out of the library. As he put the key into the lock, his thoughts began to wander back to the footsteps he heard. It's not like he could help his curiosity, it was something Ian just had to deal with. 'Those footsteps...they were so...cold.' Ian shook his head, in attempt to shrug it off. However, it didn't work. Something about those footsteps made shivers run down his spine. Something about those footsteps made Ian want to run. Something about those footsteps made him want to avoid whoever caused them. But he couldn't explain why...Well, not yet anyways.
