Eyes clenched, consciousness executes pirouettes at the very brink of nothingness as it waits for oblivion to stretch its elongated arm from within the darkness. With only a tap of its ethereal fingers, you find yourself slipping helplessly backward.
Down and down you go. The descent feels like both an eternity and a mere instant. Suddenly your feet are no longer tucked under your blanket, but submerged in crisp, sandy waters.
His hand is intertwined with yours, its warmth drawing your awareness away from the chilling clash of the waves at your calves to gaze into unfamiliar, keen, green eyes against the grey night sky.
And the longer you stare into them, their unfamiliarity starts to wear off. That's when you begin to understand that in whatever this place is, every single element flows in more ways than one simultaneously - time travels gently, yet laced with subtle urgency...eyes that hold a level of intimacy can also present themselves as an absolute mystery.
Nothing is linear. Nothing is as it looks.
You take an unhurried inhale of salty air, unable to snap yourself away from the most profound sensation of mesmerism.
"You've found it." The surprisingly familiar man whispers, the rich humming of his voice nearing your ear. "I knew you would."
Like everything else, you accept this random observation, and when he deposits a kiss at the edge of your cheekbone you don't even flinch; its gentleness causes the newfound ache in your chest to deepen and spread. You've missed him. You know this now.
"Where am I?" You ask, and the words rattle and shake with emotion.
"You don't remember?" He sighs, pulling you close and enveloping you in his delicate embrace. The stars appear to wink, casting their cosmic glow on the mirrored surface of the water. You tremble underneath the essence of his touch, the air around you intoxicating, but somehow otherworldy, as if reality had been swept away by the vast sea and was dancing along the fringes of the inky blue horizon.
You try to dig deep into your memories in a frantic attempt to decipher the reasons behind such stubborn forgetfulness, but all you can do is offer him a childish shrug; and before you can utter a word he's already staring down at you, his smile hides within a mixture of limitless patience and tenacious perseverance. He's done this before. He's spoken the words time and time again.
"It's not important, sweetheart," he says now, but you're already far too gone, instantly distracted by the massive creature's glow, the one that's making its rhythmic journey on the horizon. The brightness makes you squint, forcing your eyes back to him...his hair, a tender wilderness against the sudden tornado-like breeze. With slightly parted lips, like those of someone who's about to reveal something crucial, is quickly rendered silent by the cool shift in the once warm atmosphere he pulls you closer. The shadow of defeat darkens his features as he lifts his face toward the approaching monster.
Now that your eyes have adjusted to its splendor, the creature reminds you of a cnidarian-like lifeform. The grand swaying of its tentacles as they dangle from its floating soma prompts a strangled gasp from your throat; but it's not the peculiarity of such a being the only thing that has you questioning your sanity and twisting your stomach into a knot, its the alluring and dark aura surrounding it. An unyielding premonition.
"I'm scared," you whimper, burying your face in his shoulder and bunching up the sleeve of his shirt with your fist.
"You'll be back soon, my darling. You always do," and next time you open your eyes, its the pillow you are clutching; his words but a velvety echo against the walls of your bedroom.
Despite the sour aftertaste the goodbye has left lingering in your chest, you find solace in recognizing that unlike all those other countless times before, this time you've awoken and you .....remember.
