The silence wrapped around us as I felt Lyla stiffen. Looking at Reynar, Pedro and finally Daen, she sighed as she sank back into the cool wall behind us.
" I was thinking that our best bet would be the hills. " She muttered as she closed her eyes. " I'm all ears if anyone has a better plan. " She continued without opening her eyes.
Not a single voice raised an objection or had a better suggestion. The hills that she was referring to had to be the ones that overlooked the woods. But to make the journey so far up was a taxing job that would put everyone at the risk of fatigue.
But I could see why there were no arguments even though some of them wore frowns. It was because they didn't have a better option.
The gears in my brain clicked as I went over what I was thinking once more. It's worth a shot, I thought as I turned to Lyla.
Leaning over to her ear, I whispered, " How about coming back with me, to my pack? "
"What? " Lyla exclaimed, her eyes fluttering open in surprise as she turned to face me. She moved so quickly that I didn't have time to react and our faces ended up just a few centimetres apart.
Breathing in sharply, I gazed into her beautiful eyes before I felt Lyla's shocked face sink in. Quickly moving back, I regained my composure as I cleared my throat.
" My pack would welcome all of you. And we have enough place for hosting everyone till we figure out who these wolves are and why they're after me. If we solve that mystery and deal with them, you can come back and happily go on living in your house! " I rambled on and it made more sense when I said it out loud than it did in my head.
" The hills are a good option, but it's still uncertain. " I went on proving my point. By now I had most of the pack looking at me inquisitively. Lyla's first response had gotten everyone's attention so they continued to look at my proposal.
After I was done, Lyla looked at Daen and Pedro. She was frowning, but it looked like she hadn't disposed of the idea entirely. But Daen looked away in distaste.
" We might be walking into a trap. How do we not know that this entire thing was a charade planned by you? If you think about it, you could have easily planted yourself and the wolves here to lure us out. " She remarked, her trust for me visibly non-existent.
I stared at her in disbelief. " And get me so far wounded that I might almost die, just for luring you out? Do you think so highly of yourself that we the Civerin pack would play such a childish game just to capture you? If we wanted to, we could take you down face on. We don't need this pitiful excuse of a shenanigan to defeat you. " I growled back at her in rage.
How dare she suggest I'd do something so low when I was offering them a way out.
Daen's lips twitched, threatening to let a snarl loose. Still enraged, I glanced at Lyla and the rest of the pack. Everyone was on edge. The trust that I had built with them was threatening to snap and it was Lyla's expressions that calmed me down.
She looked at me with a hardened face, her mouth a single line, without uttering a single word as she let her eyes do the talking. They almost said, " Threaten us and we will not guarantee your safety. Be on our side and we shall take care of you. "
But what went deeper than that was the way her eyes glittered in the dull light, " Please don't fight. " They screamed out at the same time.
I sighed and swallowed my rage as I tried controlling my tone.
" Look. I'm going back to my pack, no matter what. It's up to you if you want to come. Why do you think they didn't attack me when I was at home and why they waited for me to be alone? That's because our pack is big and has the best defence troops. So it's up to you if you want to go to the hills and stay there for the rest of your days under the fear that these freaks may return any day- " I started in a flow.
" -or you can come with me and we can stop them once and for all, and you can go back and live your life peacefully again. " I ended with finality.
At this point, Daen's protectiveness and caution were starting to seem like arrogance to me and was clouding my emotions about the rest of them. I just wanted to be done with everything and head home.
" Alright everyone, settle down. Sleep for a while we don't have much time. I'll decide what to do after we rest. " She said in her alpha voice, immediately making everyone turn away and cuddle back into their sleeping postures.
I huffed and got ready to rest too, but I was too riled up to sleep.
So I silently watched Lyla as she looked at Meria and Carnel. Getting up from her spot slowly she walked over to them and cuddled down between them.
The three of them spoke in hushed tones and my exhaustion started to betray me as I felt my eyes droop.
...
A while later, I was awoken by the slight shaking of Lyla's paw. " Felix? We've decided to go with you to the Civerin pack. " She said softly with a warm smile.
