Standing in the dark alleyway that ran behind The Next Step building, Riley readied herself to bite James and ruin his life forever. Before going through with the procedure, they had taken James to the hospital to get some of his blood extracted for later vampire meals. Of course, they couldn’t tell the nurses the real reason, but thankfully Emily was a master at cover-ups and assurances.
“Here we go,” said Riley for the fourth time, as she took another deep breath.
“Just do it already,” implored Emily impatiently.
Riley licked her lips nervously. James smiled at her reassuringly. Riley grasped James’s hand in her own, brought it up, and gently sank her fangs into his wrist. As she let go, his eyes widened in shock, and he swayed back and forth once before promptly collapsing onto the ground.
“I’ve killed him!” Riley shrieked in anguish. No. No no no. No! Riley knew this hadn’t been a good idea. Why had she gone through with it? Why did this have to happen to her? Couldn’t she get a happy ending, at least once?
Emily sighed. “He’s fine. He’s just passed out, that's all.” James slowly opened one eye. “Or he’s playing a cruel joke on you.”
James stood up, brushing himself off, and laughed good-naturedly. Riley, however, was not amused. She smacked him. “Don’t ever do that again,” she warned.
James suppressed a grin. “Sorry.” He leaned forward to kiss her, and Riley closed her eyes in peaceful bliss, any romantic feelings towards Alfie completely forgotten.
They stood there a moment, looking into each other's eyes happily.
“When this is all over,” said James, breaking the silence, “We can be together again.”
Riley smiled at him. “And I can teach you how to fly!”
“In the house I’m going to get for you.”
“And where we’ll raise our one hundred children!”
“Enough time-wasting lovebirds,” interrupted Emily, “There’ll be plenty of time for this later. First, we need to get rid of Alfie.”
