"Daddy!" Patton called as soon as he spotted Virgil walking through the gates to the daycare. He could see his eyes light up with joy and the four year old set off running towards him. Virgil crouched down and caught Patton, returning his son's surprisingly wet hug.
"It snowed!" He exclaimed as soon as he had let go, smiling brightly up at Virgil from under his warm hat with fluffy cat ears.
"It sure did, kiddo." Virgil said, standing up before his legs began to ache. He hadn't been as delighted as Patton seemed to be when he had left work and realized it had snowed about two decimeters since he had last looked outside. It had created plenty of traffic jams and he was half an hour late picking Patton up. Luckily the daycare was very understanding on a day like this.
"Come look at my snowman." Patton said, already pulling Virgil towards a part of the fenced in area that was the daycare yard. There were about ten snowmen on display, none of them looking very impressive as four year olds had been the ones to put them together.
"This one's mine, guess what it is!" Patton told him, showing him one of the biggest and roundest ones. It had sort of pointy ears and what Virgil thought had to be whiskers. Normally he would have guessed that it was a cat, because Patton loved cats, but these past two weeks he had been watching My Neighbour Totoro about a billion times and, well...
"Is it Totoro?" He wondered, earning a happy giggle from Patton that told him he'd been right.
"It's Totoro!" He said and Virgil told him about how amazing of a snowman builder he was while taking him inside to get all his things before telling the daycare teacher goodbye and, as fast as possible, getting Patton to the car while he babbled about a snowball fight they had had.
Patton didn't seem bothered by the freezing december weather at all, despite his wet and snowy clothes, but Virgil had been stupid enough to wear his favorite hoodie instead of a jacket this morning, wanting to defy the dark and the cold. He regretted that now.
He buckled Patton up in the booster seat in the back, humming along when Patton told him about his day to show that he was listening. Luckily the streets seemed to have cleared up by now, much less other cars out. It was only three in the afternoon, after all, and the traffic shouldn't be too horrible.
As he started the drive, being very, very careful to avoid any place on the roads that looked slippery, Patton was talking about how he made his snow-Totoro and how nice one of the teachers had been to help him lift the second big snowball onto the first.
"And then I made so many snow angels!" Patton told him, which was one of all the things that explained why and how Patton had gotten his clothes so wet.
"That's nice." Virgil said somewhat absentmindedly, watching a traffic light that was hopefully going to turn green any second now.
"Can you and dad make snow angels with me when we get home?" Patton asked and Virgil grimaced discreetly, glancing back at his son through the rear view mirror.
"Maybe we can have some indoor activity today." Virgil suggested, still not over a few days ago when Patton had been outside playing in the rain and the mud in their garden and gotten so wet and dirty despite his rain gear that Virgil and Logan had had to wash all the clothes Patton had been wearing and then give him a bath.
"Since it's so cold maybe we should do something warm." Virgil said, having longed all day to give his husband a kiss and lie down on the couch, take it easy after the stress of work. Patton didn't seem to have anything against that suggestion and then spent the rest of the drive home looking out the car window, telling Virgil every time he saw any animal as he found them all so cute no matter if it was a dog or a crow.
Finally they got home, Patton peeling off his overalls and leaving it in a heap on the floor, about to run off to go bother his dad, probably, when Virgil caught him.
"Hang on, sweetie, the rest of your clothes are all wet too, you better change. See, your socks are leaving wet footprints on the floor." Virgil said, pointing, and Patton stared down at the floor to look at the footprints he left all the way to his room where Virgil helped him find something warm and comfortable to wear. A few days of rain, two decimeters of snow, and a four year old didn't mix well.
Ten minutes later Patton was wearing his cat onesie and a pair of warm socks, being carried down the stairs in Virgil's arms, pulling a bit on the strings from Virgil's hoodie. He sat Patton down on a chair in the kitchen, pulling two cups from a cupboard, thinking that both he and his husband would want a cup of tea.
"Hot chocolate! ...Please." Patton said, having clearly gotten another (better) idea, and Virgil thought his suggestion over for a moment despite knowing that there was no way he would be able to say no to the hopeful expression on Patton's face. His son was just too adorable for his own good, Virgil didn't know how he and Logan would survive once Patton realized the effect his pleading eyes had.
"That's a great suggestion, Pat, how can I say no when you ask so nicely?" He said, pulling a third cup from the cabinet and then grabbing a box of cocoa powder, cream, sugar, and milk.
Patton slid off of the chair, dragging it over to the counter and climbing up on it again, delighted to get to help pouring things into their cups after Virgil measured the ingredients.
It was an easy recipe, he just added two teaspoons of cocoa powder to each cup, then about twice as much sugar, then a bit of cream. Then he mixed it until it turned into a thick chocolate-y whipped cream. He filled the rest of the space in the cups with milk, leaving a centimeter or two to the top of the cup before putting them in the microwave, and he and Patton leaned close to look through the microwave window, keeping track on it to not have the cups overflow.
Soon they had their finished hot chocolate and Virgil tried to figure out if he could manage to carry them all to the living room in one trip or not.
"Pat, can you go get dad and convince him to come to the living room? He's in his office." Virgil said, Patton immediately running off as Virgil decided that he would just have to take two trips because spilling their drinks would just not be fun, especially if it was on the nice carpet they had in the living room.
Then he sat down on the couch, scrolling through the tv show options that would be fun for all three of them and deciding on Steven Universe as they were not done with that show yet and it was a bit too soon to rewatch She-Ra And The Princesses Of Power.
Patton was soon back, dragging Logan with him and Virgil met his husband's eyes with a smile, reaching his hands out for him. Patton let go of his dad to climb up on the couch and Virgil finally got to pull Logan close and press a light kiss to his lips.
"Welcome home." Logan said and kissed his forehead, which was about enough to make all of Virgil's left over stress for the work day melt away.
"Me too, me too!" Patton said, pulling at Logan's sleeve and Virgil watched him smile before kissing Patton's forehead too, making their son grin widely and place his small hands on either side on Logan's face, kissing his forehead too.
Logan lifted Patton up in his arms, sitting next to Virgil with Patton in his lap. Virgil handed them their cups of hot chocolate, making sure Patton had a proper grip around his cup before letting go of it.
Soon they had an episode of Steven Universe playing, their hot chocolate and the blanket they had wrapped around all three of them warming them up.
