"This year, my dad promised to get me a cute puppy for Christmas" I'd tell all those who were all ears. Deep down I felt like it was an empty promise but, there was still this nudge telling me it was going to happen. Christmas day arrived and mum dressed me in my new green dress and like a good little girl, did everything mum asked me to, all the while looking impatiently at the time.
Long story short, it never came (the puppy) and I was 9 then. Now I'm 15, nearing my 16th birthday. No one pays attention to it because it's just a day before Christmas so I just celebrate by singing to myself and spend my time playing on my piano. Someone knocks on my door"come in" and the door is flung open "mum has been calling for you, she's in the kitchen" I don't even make an attempt to reply her back.
"We're out of stuff" she said, scribbling on a piece of paper. She hands me the paper and some cash. I put on a jacket and walk to the nearest store which is down the street. "Merry Christmas" a woman said beside me 'its not even Christmas yet' I want to yell but stop myself in time and fake a smile.I hurry and leave the store. The wind whipping my eyes made the journey back uncomfortable.
As I step into the kitchen, mum's on the phone and believe me when I say, she does not look okay. She signals me to drop the groceries and leave. I walk to my room and lay on my bed silently thinking and wishing. Suddenly, a scene pops to my head and before I know it, my sketch pad is in my hand, me by my window, sketching my soul out.
In some minutes, I'm done. "Wow,its-" but I cut her off "what did I say about knocking and privacy?" she looks downs and I sign "Tammy, look, I'm..." "No. don't apologize, I'm sorry" I smile at her, this time it's genuine. "You were saying?" "It's amazing, you should sell it. I mean it's Christmas, who would be able to resist a lovely sketch with so much life and passion and-"I stop her ranting just before my ears fall off. I look closely at my sketch and I arch my brow "Really? You think this will sell?" "Yeah, come on" she drags me to her room.
Tammy's room is the complete opposite of mine. A cool and relaxing backdrop, colourful with stickers on the wall and a small photo studio. Lavender wallpaper made the peach of her bedsheet pop in a lovely way.My room is painted blue and black on alternate walls. My bedspread is wine in colour and I have a French door by the left extreme of my room and a swing which hangs from my ceiling and railings for protection. Hers is a mini lounge and has an amazing view of the garden. Her room provides the mood and environment needed for total relaxation. Mine, not so much. Two words to describe my room- just me.
She's quick to frame the sketch and picks up her camera which was her as she last Christmas gift, mine was a piano. She's done and she transfers them to my phone in no time. The caption:
"BEAUTIFUL AND WELCOMING, BRINGS THE CHRISTMAS
SPIRIT ALIVE. ORDER IN THE NEXT 10 MINUTES AND GET
15% OFF"
Soon, her phone started buzzing. "Woah! We already have a deal" The person offered to meet us at an alley by 6:15. I checked the time "that's only 10 minutes from now. C'mon" we put on our jackets and beanies and head out. How Tammy did this? Forgot to mention, she has her own art studio, business line and collabs with many companies. My life is so pathetic that my younger sister is slowly becoming a millionaire and I didn't notice in time. But that's by the way.
Some minutes later, we're standing there waiting, with the painting in a bag dangling in my left arm. Tammy is whining so loudly, I'm resisting the urge to shove the painting down her throat and smacking her so hard, she eventually passes out and I have complete quiet. And finally, I reach the limit of my patience, like, I've reached the dead end of this street, the last page in this chapter, and I grab her arm and start shaking her"why are you bent on annoying hell outta me? Seriously, you're not the only one freezing out here, or having other stuff to do. So please, stop-" "Tamara Willow, I presume?" We both freeze and she's quick to snatch her arm far from my grip. We're quick to compose ourselves and turning to face the person present. But take my word for it when I say, this is the last person I was expecting to show up......
