Summary: Amelia wonders if Kai has anyone to spend the holidays with this winter.

-

"Happy holidays Sheperd, hope you and your family have a nice break!" Kai announced as they turned to the path towards their car.

"Thank you, Dr. Bartley, I wish you the same!" Amelia grinned, she was a little disappointed to not see Kai for the next two weeks, but nonetheless, she was ecstatic for another Christmas with her son.

She waved goodbye and started to walk her way, then it dawned on her.

Kai's never talked about their family much, the most she knows is that they live with their cat. The neurosurgeon felt her heart ache at the thought of Kai being alone for the holidays, even worse, them working on Christmas day without her.

"Hey wait!" Amelia felt the words leave her mouth and was immediately hit with anxiety, was she really about to do this?

Kai turned around and faced her with one of their charming smiles. "Yeah?" They asked and Amelia just stood there looking for the words to ask them the question burning in her throat. "Do you-" She cut herself off for a second, her mind getting distracted at the thought of this ending awkwardly. "Sorry if this is personal... but, um, do you- do you have anyone, like your family... to spend the holidays with?"

Kai looked down and fiddled with their fingers a bit before responding. "Um... no," they let out a laugh of embarrassment, being vulnerable wasn't something they were the fondest of, especially not in front of Amelia. "Just my feline companion really," They looked back up and winced when they met Amelia's pitying eyes.

She had a sense of what that felt like, and even though she enjoyed the silence of her own company, she enjoyed it much more with Scout and her sisters.

Once she thought about it, she would adore it if Kai was to be next to her that morning.

"Well... do you maybe wanna fly back with me? You could spend it with us, and if not Christmas day it'd still be nice to have you around..." She proposed the idea with hesitancy, scared the answer may be no yet also scared of what would happen next if they were to say yes.

"Really?" They furrowed their eyebrows in confusion and Amelia stepped closer to them. "Yeah! I- I could buy you a last-minute ticket, although I'd have to get on that as soon as possible... but it'd be great to have you over! Maybe meet Maggie and the kids?" Amelia shrugged her shoulders and fawned at the flustered look Kai had on their face.

"I- sure, yeah of course! Are... are you sure though?" Kai was stuttery and awkward but in a cute, nervous way that Amelia just loved. "Definitely, I'm sure Meredith would love to have you over, and Maggie's been dying to meet you!"

"Well, I would love to be over!" The idea of spending the holidays with someone looked like it felt so new to them and Amelia just wanted to let them know that she'd spend the rest of her life with them if she could.

She wants Kai to be her family, but not the same way she wanted Meredith to be her family.

She wants Kai to meet Scout and continuously be by her and her son's side for as long as possible. That's all she wanted, Kai and Scout, right next to her on Christmas morning.

"Perfect." Amelia couldn't hold in her excited grin, which made Kai giggle a little at the notion.

"Perfect," They said, letting their arms rest to their sides.

Neither of them knew what to do next, they both just stood there like the smiling, giggling teenagers they were.
