"How you looked at
me that one night,
those 4 seconds, I'll
remember for the
rest of my life."~~Deanne Vincent

After Jay's confusing admission, I had eventually wandered back inside the house, spending the rest of the afternoon playing with Mad and Harlie. They were a blast, they're giggles filling every corner of the house as I gave them piggy back rides and chased them with the tickle monster. Come dinner time, everyone but me had said their goodbyes, having other matters to attend to but not me.
I was a twenty-two year old with no life to speak of other than following orders and fucking, that was the life I led. Not that I minded on a regular basis, but the interaction with Jay had thrown me off kilter. Being a Made man had been all I had ever wanted for as long as I could remember, and it held my interest for the most part, until the days that business seemed to lull to a boring level. Sadly, I think I enjoyed life more when people were trying to kill us.
"Where did Mr. Jay take off to earlier?" Anika asked Mason between bites of popcorn while we waited on pizza to be delivered. "He was here, and then suddenly he wasn't."
"Yeah, he does that," Mason sighed, snagging a handful of the buttery pieces for himself. "Surprised you even bother to ask anymore."
"Well, one can hope he'll stop being so broody all the time," she huffed.
"So... that's normal for him?" I asked, trying to sound more curious than concerned.
What I had glimpsed earlier on his phone screen had been odd, his reaction making it even more questionable. He clearly hadn't been happy with the woman on the screen and I had a feeling it had more to do with her leaving the house instead of possibly breaking in. It led me to wonder who she was or who she was to him.
"Pretty much," Kas said, flipping through channels as Bryce came back into the room and took a seat beside him. Kas yawned and looked over at him with a frown. "Where's Andi?"
"Mad thought it would be funny to pee on momma before she laid him down," Bryce chuckled in response.
"That's my boy," Kas grinned proudly, causing the rest of us to laugh.
"Does Jay have a girlfriend or something?" I asked after things had settled down again, hoping for casual as I grabbed my own handful of popcorn. "Is that why he's so all over the place all the time?"
"Mr. Jay with a girlfriend?" This incredulous question came from Anika who nearly choked on her food. "That would be a first."
"He's not a monk, Angel," Mason said, rolling his eyes at his girlfriend. To me he said, "Jay doesn't really do relationships like that. He's got other... interests that keep him occupied."
Knowing what I did about Jay, I could only imagine what the man got up to that kept him distant from women, or people in general for that matter. When I had first met him a few years ago, I could feel the danger rolling off of him despite his cool demeanor. It had been intriguing, seeing a man that was capable of unspeakable things without flinching also maintaining such a high level of control.
I wasn't against killing, did it when it needed to be done and had even been known to enjoy it from time to time. But Jay, he was a different creature altogether, and I had met a lot of monsters in my lifetime. That wasn't what I saw when I looked at him, never had been. He said he'd never hated me, but would I ever learn what was truly beneath the mask?
