"You have to be joking me!" She goes behind Desiree

"Too late for that. Jimmy, don't let that man corrupt you with his bad habits. You still got time to be somebody."

"Aw, he is somebody. He's my son. Thought I wouldn't go through with that, did you, Dessi? But I'm proud to admit it. Jimmy's my son!"

"Yeah!"

"Wow. Congratulations, huh? Must have taken real courage to finally proclaim your progeny after 24 years. Why don't you two go to bed and sleep it off."

"Seriously Jimmy your hammered." Said Sapphire in disbelief

"You know, Jimmy, this is the perfect time for me to tell you something that my father told me."

"What?"

"It's the Toledo code. The first minute you let a woman tell you what to do is the first minute you hand your balls to 'em." Sapphire rolled her eyes

"I want to keep my balls."

"You hold on to them, son."

"Things are gonna change around here, Elsa. No more bossing us around, okay? You got two strong bulls here ready to run this whole joint."

"That's right."

"Ow."

"Jesus." Sapphire couldn't believe Jimmy

"Idiots."

"Come on, come on."

"Sing something else. Sing it! Shh. Shh, shh. Sing it, baby! Sing it. Go. Shh, quiet, Elsa. Shh... You'll wake everybody up. You don't want to wake anybody. Shh. Shh! Quiet! Too loud. Shh."

"Goddarn those two." Sapphire rub her temple. At night Sapphire and the others were worried ma petite was no were to be seen

"Petite!"

"She's so tiny. She could be in a hole somewhere, screaming, and we wouldn't hear her, let alone see her."

"Petite? Where are you?"

"Ma Petite."

"You head toward that clearing, I'll hug the riverbed. Take DiMaggio."

"Come on, boy. Come on. Find, find."

"Ma petite."

"Ma Petite!"

"Oh. No... No body?"

"Looks like an animal took her. Maybe a coyote."

"Bones and all."

"Oh, no." Her mother broke down she held her tight

"Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. God. Oh, no, no. Oh." Sapphire mourned for her small friend in her trailer. The next day Sapphire wonder what was Maggie blabbing about.

"Oh, Jimmy!"

"What? What happened?"

"That is what we are trying to determine."

"I was out in the woods, picking flowers for Ma Petite's memorial grave. There was a crash. I went to see what it was, and there was a car, and in the car... I'm sorry, Jimmy, it was your mother. She's dead."

"What?" Sapphire gasp quietly

"She was in an accident?"

"It wasn't an accident. I think she killed herself."

"sh1t!"

"Come on."

"Suicide?"

"Oh, dear, no. Oh, but why?!"

"She was sick. In a lot of pain, too."

"No. My mom wasn't sick."

"She was, though, son."

"No."

"She told me so herself."

"No."

"Oh Jimmy." Sapphire hugged him crying

"Guess she wanted to go out on her own terms."

"Oh. My God. Where is she? Take me to her."

"Her head's come off? Jesus. How hard did she hit that tree?" Sapphire gasp

"Look! Oh! She must have wrapped this chain around that tree, and then wrapped it around her neck, then hit the gas. I guess she wanted it to be quick."

"Oh! Oh, mein God in Heaven! Why?!" Desiree held young Sapphire crying Ethel was a second mother to her Desiree rub her back. at night they held a funeral for her Sapphire stood by Jimmy for support

"A flat tire, a leaky faucet. My mother could fix anything. She was famous for her dirty jokes. But she was also a woman of culture. But she loved poetry. She used to read it to me as a kid when I was going to bed. Emily Dickinson was her favorite. "I'm nobody. Who are you? Are you nobody, too? Then there's a pair of us. Don't tell. They'd banish us, you know." You weren't nobody, Ma."

"I'm sorry." Sapphire held her best friend

"It's okay, son."

"All right."

"All right. Let's go get a drink."

"That woman was my friend. She was tough, funny. She didn't need a man to... take care of her or her child. She was a survivor from the day she was born. Nobody handed her nothing. We never had it easy. None of us. Especially not us women. I know you all know what I'm talking about." They nod

"It's true. Look what my daddy did to me. Because I dared to live my own life. Love who I wanted."

"You think the law might have anything to say about it?"

"Hell no. She's his property."

"Let me tell you something, ladies. That girl, she's every last one of us. Well, I say no more. Not in my house! Any man that would do that, he needs to pay. Who's with me?" Sapphire got a bad feeling of what the girls planned but she worried for Jimmy although he was with Maggie she still loved him while she goes down to check on him she seee him fighting with Maggie and it was ugly her Jimmy would shout when he was mad but a drunk then she see Maggie run off so when walks over

"Jimmy this isn't you."

"Oh great here comes another one to speak."

"Jimmy please stop this. Your not a drunk."

"Oh get a life as I told Maggie go live your beautiful life."

"Jimmy."

"Go!" Sapphire just left knowing his feelings are in full blown. Her full love is out gone by the mer touch of a bottle.
