In 1912 Berlin , 18-year-old Pearl Witherspoon , her wealthy fiancé John Flinn, and Pearl's widowed mother, Lady Marge, board The Royal Celestia. This large,porcelain vessel spanned about 883 feet from stern to bow, and its hull was divided into 16 compartments that were presumed to be watertight.
Lady Marge emphasized that Pearl's marriage to John Flinn would resolve the family's financial problems and maintain their upper-class status. Meanwhile,Joe Knight , a poor young artist, wins a third-class Royal Celestia ticket in a poker game. After setting sail, Pearl, distraught over her loveless engagement, climbs over the stern railing, intending to jump overboard, just when Joe appears, Pearl slips & is holding onto the railing, Joe runs to her rescue & grabs her hands, Joe's grip is slowly slipping away due to her hands being so sweaty..
Pearl Screams !
Pleading & Begging to be pulled back up as she slips more and more from Joe's grip, he uses one hand to grab her by her shoulder, & tells her to try to pull herself up on the count of 3 using all his strength, he takes his other hand and grabs her other shoulder lifting her up, high enough to step on the railing,
"ON THE COUNT OF 3!"
He says "1....2...."
she uses all her strength to help Joe pull her up back onto the deck. They both fall aggressively on the floor when footsteps rapidly approaches, a group of men along with John approached them and asked what happened. Pearl gives Joe this sly look and turns back to her fiancé.
"HELP HER UP.. DON'T JUST STAND THERE !"
John screams to his men. As they help Pearl off the floor..
"HE DID THIS TO ME!" she cry's softly into John's arms.
Joe hurriedly stands up & try's to defend himself but John looks over to his men and raises his finger, The men rush towards Joe at once, grabbing him up they rush him to a room, tie his arms up, A gun pressed to Joe's head,
"Do you want to confess to your filthy behavior before you go.. " the man holding the gun says.
Joe screams desperately saying he didn't do it. All of a sudden the light shut off & it gets really quiet. The men panic looking at each other-
