As I sat there staring at the entrance to the hospital, I wondered why I always tried to avoid an argument. I hated to argue. Especially with Y/N. So I preferred to retreat or have an excuse to leave the room.

I closed my eyes and sighed deeply when suddenly my phone started ringing. I had been waiting for this all this time. I quickly took the phone out of my pocket and answered it.

"Hey BF/N. How is she?" I wanted to know right away.

"Hi Adam. Still no change. But I wanted to tell you that Y/N's mom just left. So if you want to see Y/N it's now. I don't know how long she'll be gone. All she said was that she was going home for a little while. So hurry up," replied Y/N's best friend.

She was the only one keeping me informed at the moment. Y/N's mother wouldn't let me anywhere near Y/N's room at the hospital. I couldn't blame her. If we hadn't been fighting, Y/N wouldn't have been with her mother. And she certainly wouldn't have tripped over her mother's cat and fallen down the stairs.

If I had just set a date for the wedding, we would be planning our big day right now. Y/N would be lying safe and sound in my arms. Instead, she was lying in a hospital bed, unconscious because she hurt her head badly during her fall.

"I'll be right there. Room 345?" I replied as I got out of the car and headed toward the entrance.

"Right. See you in a minute." said BF/N and then hung up.

A few minutes later, I arrived outside the room with the matching number. Briefly, I hesitated. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. That way I hoped to brace myself for the sight.

Then I carefully opened the door and stuck my head in to make sure it was really the right room.

"Oh hey. Come on in." BF/N said softly as she stood up to give me a quick hug.

My eyes, however, rested on Y/N from the first second and never let her go. She looked so small lying there. So fragile. I swallowed as I sat down at her side and took her hand in mine.

"So please tell me what the doctors said." I said quietly to BF/N, but continued to look only at Y/N.

"Well. The injury is not as severe as they first thought. That's good. And they checked her brain activity and there everything is normal and as it should be. The doctor said it's not a coma. There is no reason medically why she is not waking up. No one can explain it. However, they think that Y/N is stuck somewhere. That she is preventing herself from waking up. Like she's trying to protect herself from something." she explained to me.

I could not explain it to myself. If there was nothing wrong with her physically, why didn't she wake up?

"Hey sweetheart. It's Adam. Can you hear me? Listen I want to apologize to you for what I did. But I'd like to look you in the eye while I do it. You can yell at me, too, if that'll help you. But I need you to wake up, baby. I need you. Your family needs you. We all miss you.

I promise you, if you give me another chance, I will make it all up to you. You were right when you said that you are the best thing that could have happened to me in my life". I babbled.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I suddenly heard someone yell behind me.

It was Y/N's mother and she looked so angry like smoke was about to come out of her ears any second.

"I'm sorry, M/N. I just had to see her," I told her quietly.

"You have no right to want to see her, Adam. You had your chance." she replied loudly.

"I know that! I know I fucked up. But before I even had a chance to talk to her and apologize, she tripped. Like it or not, I love your daughter! And I'm a fucking idiot, I am aware of that. I want her to wake up as much as you do!" I said, trying really hard to stay calm.

"You should go, Adam. Y/N has made her choice." she then said as she crossed her arms over her chest.

"Okay, I will go, but you should know that I will not give up. I'm not going to give up on Y/N." I replied then I leaned over to Y/N and gave her a kiss on the forehead.

"I love you, Y/N. Never forget that!" I whispered to her.

Then, with a heavy heart, I made my way out of the room. M/N's angry glances followed my every step. It was silent in the room, not a sound could be heard.

"Adam..." we suddenly heard a faint voice.

I froze on the spot with the door handle in my hand. Slowly I turned around and saw, the most beautiful thing I could imagine at that moment.

Y/N had her eyes open and was looking at us. Then her gaze lingered on me and a small smile formed on her lips.

"Y/N!" I gasped and hurried back to her side.

"Is it true?" she croaked.

"Is what true, baby?" I asked, confused.

"You still love me..." she continued softly.

"I never stopped." I replied with a smile.

"We're both stubborn jerks. " she said with a tired smile.

"Maybe, but I'm your stubborn jerk if you still want me," I said, taking her hand in mine again.

"No giving up?" she then asked unexpectedly.

I realized that she must have heard everything. Maybe she needed to hear this to find her way back. Maybe we both needed that to find our way back to each other.

"Never. Until death does us apart," I replied, pulling the ring out of my jeans pocket and putting it in the place it should never have left.
