Yaz shivered as the cold air of the snow biome rushed at her. Opening that airlock was always an unpleasant surprise. She was with Brooklynn, on the way to check up on Angel and Rebel. Sammy and Kenji had found Kash's gaming console and insisted that they needed to see who was the best. Darius and Ben had headed out to check on Firecracker. So that just left the two of them, trampling through the snow towards the warmth of the truck. Brooklynn was rambling about Kenji, but Yaz was only half paying attention. It wasn't that she didn't care, more so that something of far greater importance occupied her mind like a parasite. She was tuned into the conversation just enough to nod in the right places, yet hiding away in her own mind letting anxiety eat at her. It wasn't often that she was alone with Brooklynn and they had gotten a lot closer over the past couple months. Brooklynn trusted her enough to open up to her about Kenji, and had also cared about her a lot when she was getting her nightmares. It was nice to finally be on the same page instead of at each other's throats. She had thought after the whole Sammy being a spy issue that Brooklynn and her would never be friends again but running away from deadly reptiles on a daily basis tends to make things rather unpredictable. They finally reached the truck and Yaz climbed in to drive.
"No crashing this one," she joked, giving Brooklynn a side eye. Brooklynn exhaled loudly, then let out a small laugh.
"No promises," she replied teasingly, smiling. There was something about their friendship that created a comfortable atmosphere. It made Yaz tempted to open up to Brooklynn, but she was hesitant because she had opened up to others before and... it hadn't ended very well. But there was something different about today, confidence was in the air and she could feel her confession on the tip of her tongue, ready to finally surface from the depths of her mind at the smallest effort. She drove the truck through the snow, feeling as light as the flakes that were falling everywhere. There was no way of knowing how Brooklynn would react. It could either go very well, or very badly. Either way, it would be the first time she ever told anyone and that would be something in itself. At least... that's what she was trying to tell herself. The reality was that if the reaction was bad it might scare her away from ever telling someone again. But she had to try at least. Eventually two familiar bundles of whitish-blue were visible through the murky snow. Brooklynn let out a little noise of excitement and jumped out of the truck as soon as it stopped. Yaz smiled at the sight of her so happy. Angel came running to Yaz and nuzzled away contently. Yaz spent a while throwing snowballs at the two dinos, it seemed to entertain them. She suddenly felt a cold sting on the side of her face and turned to see Brooklynn doubled over laughing.
"How dare you throw a snowball at me?!" she said over exaggerated, quickly rolling her numb fingers around in the snow to give herself some ammo. Brooklynn squeaked and started running. Too bad Yaz had learnt a thing or two from her sports friends back home about how to throw well. The snowball whizzed through the air and connected solidly to the back of Brooklynns head.
"Ow," she laughed, rubbing her head, "okay, okay, we're even." Yaz smirked.
"I totally won." she said smugly.
"No you didn't."
"I got a headshot."
"So? I got a stealth shot!"
"Whatever I still won."
"Absolutely not." They continued arguing playfully until they were back in the truck. They could have stayed longer but the tips of their fingers had become icicles, and they needed to be mindful of frostbite. They both climbed back into the truck and that's when Yaz remembered the confession she meant to give before they returned to the group. She sighed, realising this was her last chance. Brooklynn rubbed her hands together and blew on them, shivering slightly as her body adjusted to the warmer temperature. "Hey can I... talk to you about something?" Yaz questioned hesitantly, her words becoming surprisingly difficult to form. Brooklynn's demeanour changed quite quickly, and she eagerly turned to hear what Yaz had to say.
"Of course, you can tell me anything," she replied, clearly trying to contain her excitement. Yaz knew this was her last chance to give up. She could blow it off right now and continue the way she had always done, in solitary silence, keeping her thoughts contained carefully. But a weird urge took over her to commit to her intentions. She wasn't about to turn back now that she was so close.
"Brooklynn... I'm... gay." The words fell flatly out of her mouth, she ended up sounding disappointed in herself even if she wasn't actually. Brooklynn's face was invaded with an odd sort of joy.
"Oh Yaz," she said happily, "I totally already knew but I'm so glad you finally feel comfortable enough to tell me." Yaz froze, taking a while to process what she was saying.
"You- you knew? How?" she stammered, taken a little aback. Brooklynn's face turned to a playful kind of unamused expression.
"Yaz... I hate to break it to you but it was kind of obvious once I got to know you," she chuckled, giving Yaz a soft elbow in the side. Yaz smiled, laughing a little and letting out a breath she hadn't realised she had been holding.
"So I got all nervous for nothing?!" Yaz joked, rolling her eyes.
"You got nervous? Oh Yaz, it's not like I would react badly. You know my dads are gay, I was like raised to accept people no matter who they love. I still love you."
"Thanks Brooklynn," Yaz replied, feeling like her emotions were melting together and becoming hard to distinguish from one another, "you're kinda the first person I've told." Brooklynn's smile widened and she attacked Yaz with a hug, slowly squishing all the air out of Yaz's lungs.
"Then let's make it even," Brooklynn said, still clinging onto Yaz, "I'm bi, and I've never told anyone that before." Yaz smiled, feeling a lot less alone.
"Really?" she replied, "I have to admit I'm a little surprised." Brooklynn shrugged, giving a playful eye roll.
"I guess I'm just full of surprises," she replied, finally letting go of Yaz and leaning back to do her signature 'pow pow' hand motions. Yaz smirked and then looked down. She had to decide whether she wanted to ride this wave of confidence or jump ship now. Brooklynn didn't miss much and could obviously tell there was something Yaz wanted to say.
"Tell me," she said, taking Yaz's hands gently to comfort her.
"Okay..." Yaz said hesitantly, "but you have to promise to not freak out." Brooklyn smiled,
"No promises," she teased, "but I can guarantee I won't judge you." Yaz nervously bit her lip, trying to summon the courage to vocalise feelings she had been hiding for a long time.
"I like Sammy!" she blurted out suddenly, managing to surprise herself. She tore one of her hands away from Brooklynn's and slapped it over her mouth. Brooklynn let out a squeal and shook her free hand around in excitement. Yaz felt her face getting warm and desperately tried to stop it.
"Yaz this is amazing!" Brooklynn said, her voice high pitched and rushed.
"It is?"
"Of course it is! Now you can confess to Sammy!" she said without skipping a beat.
"Brooklynn..." Yaz started, not sure how to react, "I love your enthusiasm but I think I need some time before I'm ready for that." Brooklynn's face dropped a little but quickly regained its former joy in a calmer manner.
"Of course," she said, her voice slowing back to normal, "I won't tell a single soul. This time, I promise."
"I won't either," Yaz said smiling, feeling a huge weight lift from her shoulders and fly off into the sky. She knew at that moment that their friendship was one she was willing to fight for no matter the cost. And now she could maybe begin to think about how she wanted to confess to Sammy. However, it was likely still a long way off. She fired the truck up again and they started the drive back, this time rambling about both Kenji and Sammy.
