I hear the explosion before I see it. I had been happily helping a young man adjust to his new surroundings after coming through on the pilgrimage. Then, a strong pair of arms dragged me away from the oxygen tank I held and threw me to the ground. Then the explosion.
My ears rang as I tried to get my bareings, but my puny lungs were struggling to even breathe. I opened my terrified eyes to see the face of my brother standing over me. I hadn't fully processed this before I turned my head and saw the body of a young girl splayed next to me. I think she was Josh's girlfriend going by the picture she showed me. I turned my head back to see my brother squatting down to pick me up. He cradled me like a bride and picked me up with a grunt.
"Don't worry sissy I got you."

It's been a few days since the sixers, Lucas, and his newfound army stopped their way through Terra Nova and over threw my dad. A few days locked in a dark room, shaking and terrified without my meds. Lucas at least was generous enough to give me a blanket before leaving and not coming back. I haven't seen anyone or anything in days. No window, no book, no nothing but the endless darkness. I've started to convince myself that my body had shut down enough that I must be blind or dead. I haven't even been given food, so I'm starving.
Suddenly a miracle happens and a door I can't see swings open, bringing in sunlight and my brother. I turn some kind of switch outside the door, and I am blinded and surrounded by light. I don't even hear him cross the room before he is pressing the mask from an oxygen tank on my lips, and my exhausted lungs are suddenly full of relief. He presses a hand to my cheek before moving my dirty tangled hair from my face and kissing my forehead.
"Why?" I ask as I remove the mask from my face. That's when the scared-little-girl tears start. I've never been able to control my emotions well around anyone. I let out another sob before he even axknowledges the question.
"Our father had to be stopped."
"What are you doing out there?"
"Believe me, you don't want to know. I'm aware of how much you love this place. I don't want to break your heart."
"Why did you put me in the dark and starve me? What have I done to you. I'm going to die without my medicine!"
He presses a hand to my cheek again, and I see the face of my brother replaced with the mask of a killer. "I had to make you would do as you're told. That your actions would have consequences if you tried to stop me."
"Why even bother saving me from the explosion then!" I scream, attempting to look tough, but my voice breaks, and my body is too weak to stand to further my point. The scream ends in a coughing fit.
"Because I love you. In fact, you're the only one I love."
"So I'm not just leverage against Dad?!"
"Don't call him that!" He snaps, standing up from the bed. "He lost the right to be our Dad when he let them kill mom."
"Lucas stop -" Then he hits me, hard enough to silence me and bring the tears back to my eyes.
"I can see that you're still not ready to stand by my side and behave." With that, he storms out of my room and leaves me in the dark again. Without even the oxygen tank.
