Robert stared at himself for a long time in the mirror, a gun in hand. He thought of all the times he had hit Birdie. He thought of her crying in her room almost every night.
Finally, he had willed himself to do it. He put the gun to his head and started to squeeze the trigger.
"Rob! Rob!" he heard a voice yell from outside.
His sister.
How would she feel if she lost her niece and her brother?
Robert put the gun under the sink and went to unlock the door for Jess. When she saw him, she bit her lip and started to cry. He expected her to punch him, or, God, even kill him. Instead, she wrapped her arms around him, crying on his shoulder.
Robert Williams lived to become a better man. He quit drinking, started charity work, and even remarried Elizabeth. Somehow, Birdie's death had brought them back together. There wasn't a day that went by when Robert didn't think about his daughter.
