I woke up on the floor. The beige carpet itched my back. I tried sitting up but the excruciating pain spread throughout my body. My right I was swollen shut, and my other was clouded by tears. I let out a quiet help, but no one came. I knew then that I was going to have to deal with this alone. I heard no noise. Brett must have left the house when he was finished with me.
My cell phone was all the way down stairs. Inch by inch, I made my way to the stairs. It took me five minutes to move six inches. I looked at the wooden steps, i’m never going to get down there, I thought. I twisted my self so my legs were out in front of me, and my back was on the floor. I inched my self down the first step. Then the second. I started to get the hang of it by the the fourth step. As I was about to set my bum on the fifth step, my hand slipped. I was falling at a slow pace, my stomach was moving in and out as the steps concaved and convexed. I reached the bottom and the tears wouldn’t stop falling from my eyes. The salty liquid burned the open wounds that painted my face.
I laid there in silence. I heard some kids run by and I screamed for help, but sure enough, no one came. I finally got the energy to begin making my way to my phone again. The black iphone 4 rested on a table just out of reach of my hand. My bloody hand kept getting closer and closer until I managed to grab it. I dialed 0-0-0 (the emergency help number in Australia). My eyes began to flutter as I heard the operator. Black clouds coated my eyes.

I forced my heavy eyelids open. I was laying in an unfamiliar bed while I heard screaming and crying from every direction. I heard the nurses yelling in a chaotic fashion.
“Get the crash cart!” I heard someone shout.
“Clear!” I heard a the jolt of electricity run through the person on the gurney.
I heard a flat line followed by another jolt of electricity.
“Time of death, 11:52pm.”
I felt shivers run down my spine. Cries of terror reminisced in the waiting area. A man was crying and yelling at the top of his lungs. I tried sitting up, but the pain in my stomach was unbearable. I lifted my gown, keeping the blanket covering my bare legs and stomach. I pulled the blankets down to show the colors that painted my stomach. There were blues, purples, browns, and spots of red. It would’ve been a piece of art if my abdomen wasn’t the canvas.
I quickly shoved my gown back over my stomach as the nurse walked in.
“Hi honey, do you know where you are? How old are you? What’s your name?” the questions never would’ve stopped if I hadn’t interrupted her.
“I’m in the hospital, I’m 17 and my name is Alexa Bond,” She took notes on her clipboard before revealing four different colored pills in a small cup.
“Ok hun, here take these,” she handed me the pills and some water to swallow them with. “You’ll have to take them again before breakfast tomorrow,” she announced.
“W-wait, how long am I going to stay here?” I asked
“We’d like to keep you another night for observation,” she looked as if she wanted an answer, so nodded. “Is it okay if a few officers come in and ask you some questions?” She asked as if I could only agree.
Three men walked in wearing uniform. One with dark hair held a cup of coffee while the others had notebooks and pens. The dark haired man walked over to my bed and grabbed a chair from the edge of the room.
“Hi Alexa, my name is officer Brant. I’m going to ask you a few questions about what happened yesterday afternoon,” I gulped down the pills and nodded my head. “Do you know who did this to you?” My face went pale. I couldn’t spit out his name.
“B-Br-Brett,” I stuttered, “H-he’s my s-step brother,” I had a hard time getting the words out of my mouth.
“Do you know where we could find him?” Officer Brant took a sip of his coffee while the others wrote every one of my words in their notebooks.
I looked up at the clock, it read 12:05am. I thought for a moment, “He’ll be at the Brown Alley nightclub in Melbourne,” I exclaimed. I reached for my stomach as a shock of pain scattered throughout my midsection. A blonde police officer called the nurse, but I motioned my hand for the lady to go back to work.
“Thank you, my dear,” Said officer Brant. He smiled at me and then looked at his partners. “Let’s go catch this bastard,” He snapped. The three men walked out of the room, all with blank expressions across their faces.
I wondered where my stepdad was, he didn’t care about me anyway. I was fighting to stay awake, even though I slept all afternoon. I think one of those medications the nurse gave me made me drowsy. I forfeited the fight, and let my eyes close and my thoughts drift off.
