Lexy Cross walked through the school halls with a pep in her step this morning. She was smiling from ear to ear as she passed various colored posters showing off the same event: Junior Prom. The theme was 'Enchanting Night' and she had her lilac, ballroom style dress picked out weeks ago and shopped with Junior to make sure his suit's tie complimented it wonderfully.
She entered the school's cafeteria and saw her two best friends already at their signature spot, sitting close together as they always did.
She smacked her bag down, making Jake and Devon break eye contact.
"Are you guys as pumped as I am?" she said excitedly.
They gave her a confused look.
"Prom? Duh! It's next week! What's yall color scheme?"
She didn't notice their exchanged look as she took out her breakfast from her buy.
"Are y'all going with the green and blue I mentioned?" she asked when she got no answer.
When they continued to be silent, she looked at them confusedly,"What's up, guys?"
Finally Devon talked first, "We're not going."
Her jaw dropped to the floor, "What?"
She turned her glare to Jake, who simply just shook his head nonchalantly.
"What do you mean y'all aren't going?! Yes you are! This is prom! Best night of our lives!"
But they stood their ground, "We just decided to not go,"
Lexy looked at both of them for a moment before saying, "Who was it?"
They looked dumbfounded, Jake asked, "What?"
"Who doesn't want to go and is making the other not go?" she said with sass.
Devon rolled his eyes. "It's not like that.."
-flashback to last night-
Jake and Devon were at the park near the Wheeler's house. It was getting dark and they were sitting closely on the slide while Devon talked about an upcoming podcast idea he had. Jake was listening while adding with a sharpie the array of drawings on the inside of the slide.
"- The guy killed like 6 people before they caught him. I think it'd be an interesting story to talk about. Wanna co-host with me, babe?"
"Sure." Jake said, finishing his artwork of a very detailed penis,
His boyfriend looked over and smirked, "That's totally gay."
They both laughed. Suddenly, Devon's phone beeped.
It was a text from Lexy.
'Yo I had the cutest idea! Y'all should totally do blue and green matching ties for prom!:)"
Devon sighed.
Jake looked over, "What's she saying?"
"She's texting about prom." Devon just felt so conflicted about the subject. He really didn't know how to tell his boyfriend that he had no desire to go. This was Junior Prom, not even the real thing and the thought of being around his peers, dancing to cheesy music when they could be chilling at his house, cuddling alone to a movie sounded..overwhelming. But he knew Lexy wanted to go and was expecting them as well. He wanted to bring it up to Jake but felt like his feelings were selfish. It was only one night, he could power through.
But suddenly Jake sighed dramatically, getting his attention. " So don't get mad."
Devon looked at him confused, "What?"
"While we're talking about that. I kinda..don't wanna go. Junior prom sounds overrated."
Devon stared wide-eyed and speechless, before grabbing Jake's face and giving him a long kiss.
When they finally broke for air, Jake asked, "What was that for?"
"I don't want to go either. I'm so glad you said it first." Devon chuckled, kissing him again. He felt even more in that moment that Jake was so perfect for him.
-end of flashback-
Back in the cafeteria, Devon stated, "So yeah.. It was mutual."
"Aw, come on!" Lexy pleaded, "It's going to be so much fun! Plus everyone knows you guys are dating so no one's going to give y'all shit for dancing together."
"You were there in science when Todd hit me with a paper ball and called me a fag, right?" Jake sassed back.
"Todd's a dick and his girlfriend dumped him so I doubt he's going anyways. But guys," she grabbed their hands and batted her eyes in a last attempt to plead her case, "Pleeeeease. For me?"
Jake wasn't budging. But Devon was sweating.
"Well, I guess we can..." Before he could finish giving in, Jake stopped him by putting his hand over his mouth.
"Hey!" Lexy protested.
Jake looked at his silented boyfriend, "Be honest, babe. You wanna go to prom?"
He looked between Lexy and Jake hesitantly, but ultimately shook his head 'no'.
"You wanna chill at your house all night and watch movies?"
He nodded 'yes' then got released.
Jake threw his arm over his boyfriend's shoulders, "Sorry Lex, the man has spoken."
Devon rolled his eyes.
Lexy pouted and glared, "Y'all better go to the next one or I'm not coming to y'all wedding."
