Kara's POV
"'No!' Jimmy Protested."
I hurriedly finished typing the sentence across the screen before rushing to save the document and turn off the computer before my mom could find it and read it. I grab my keys from the desk beside me and bump my ankle on the leg of it as I slide the chair back into place.
"Ouch!" I screech, grasping my ankle clumsily and stumbling around a bit.
"Kara, hurry your slow ass up!" Scarlett screams from the living room.
Good God, that girl can be so loud sometimes. I grab my purse, shrug it over my shoulder in my rush, and sprint from my mom's office. I slide past the alarm and have to double back, nearly tripping over my own feet in the process.
"Could you move any slower?" Alyssa shouts from my garage.
"I'm coming! I'm coming!" I yell before shutting the door and typing in the alarm code. The bleep it lets out alerts me that it's on. I burst out of the house and slide into the driver's seat of my blue Hyundai. I check my mirrors, and then pop 'Take Me Home' into the CD player. Each of us smiles as we nod along to the beat. We open our mouths wide and belt out the lines to our favorite songs as we drive along towards Hannah's house.
"What if I actually get to meet Louis?!" Scarlett shrieks out after a while of amicable silence.
Her brown eyes are wide and full of glee and mischief. Alyssa shakes her head, her round green eyes squinting in and smiles. We've all been over this before.
"I won't have time to comment on it because I'll be meeting Harry," I counter with a shake of my dark brown hair and a sultry glint in my hazel eyes.
Scarlett rolls her eyes and her face rearranges itself into a smirk.
"And I'll be out eating with Niall, so I won't care about either one of you!" Alyssa quickly adds in with a snarky smile and nod.
We all dissolve into a laughing fit and I signal before changing lanes.
I exit and melt smoothly into the new lane with a quick backward glance. Scarlett is tapping away at her iPhone; probably looking through a new slew of clothing that she's planning on buying when we get to Julliard's. Alyssa is screeching out what I'll assume to be "LET ME KISS YOU!" I shake my head and smile to myself as I sneakily switch the song to Over Again.
I feel my face grow calm as Liam begins the tune. His angelic voice rising and falling softly along with the melodious tune. I sing along and the car goes quiet except for my own personal duet with each boy. When Harry's part comes along, I attempt to make my high soprano mimic his deep voice before sliding easily into Louis's higher one more comfortably. When the song ends, there's a gap of silence in the car before the next song that would usually be filled with chatter. I glance at Scar in my mirror and she's staring straight into it. Straight at me. I look to Alyssa and she's following her lead. I feel my skin grow hot and turn my focus back to the road as the next song plays. 'No more solos, Kara,' I quickly tell myself with a sigh.
The girls begin to speak again and just as I begin to feel that the moment has passed, Scarlett interjects: "Kara, that was really pretty. You're a great singer, doll!"
I shake my head violently and thank her even though my mind is screaming out : 'That's a lie!' Alyssa nods her agreement alongside Scarlett and mumbles something along the lines of wishing that she could sing. I chuckle and keep my eyes facing forward. They don't know how honestly insecure and unsure I am of my own voice and I've never voiced my apprehensions before. That's one of the reasons I love the boys so much. Once, in an interview, Harry mentioned being told that he could sing, but actually needing a second opinion to let him know that he was actually as talented as he wished. He was sick with nerves and worry before his audition, but finally he tried out for something that changed the complete course of his life. Each of those five boys gathered the courage to find out. Here I was still cringing at the thought of singing in front of two of my closest friends. I shake my head again at the stupidity of my fears.
I signal and turn into Hannah's driveway, honking for her to come outside. She runs out, bag in hand, shades slipping down the bridge of her nose, and hops into the car beside Scarlett. The huge smile never leaving her face.
She tilts her shades down even lower and turns her large green eyes on me, "Girl, I just read those steamy new chapters on that FanFic of yours," she murmurs appreciatively, "You and Harry have all the fun! What about me and Liam?"
I feel my lips break open in a cheeky grin before turning and saying, "With all the calories Haz and I were burning, we just didn't have time for the two of you, love!"
I finish with a sly wink as I back out of her drive. She laughs out loud along with the other girls. I head towards the freeway and take the ramp on, keeping my eyes peeled. Hannah fills the car with easy chatter and passes Alyssa an Ed Sheeran CD, which she quickly exchanges 'Take Me Home' for. We each begin to hum along, occasionally attempting his beat-boxing and giving our own renditions of our favorite parts. When Little Bird comes on, I can't help but to pull apart my lips and sing along. The girls all grow quiet again. I feel my resolve lessening- the breaths becoming shaky in fear and my hands gripping the wheel tightly in growing apprehension- but I hold onto it with needy and grasping fingers, not wanting the bravery I'm feeling at the moment to wash away.
Sooner, rather than later, I grow more relaxed and soon my voice is rising and falling almost comfortably. I hear my voice grow to a crescendo with his, and as the song ends, I realize that my face has broken into a relieved smile. I quickly smooth it away from my features and hesitate before glancing about me. Hannah looks awestruck- she's never heard me sing before- Scarlett is, for once, speechless, and Alyssa has a glazed expression going on that I like to call her "Goldfish Face". I attempt a small smile that grows wide before I can control it. From their faces, the girls obviously approve. I take that to heart, I mean, these are my girls, if my voice didn't measure up they would be the first to let me know I should pursue other options. Instead my girls were the first small piece in my future lego house. My girls were my foundation.
