AN: This is something I wasn't able to fit into the previous chapter without it feeling like a disruption to the story. So I decided to create an interlude instead.
GLaDOS
I was never fond of humans. They generally annoyed me. However, Aperture's human staff seemed to go out of their way to make me despise them. Not only did they treat me like a lifeless machine, but they also forced me to endure those maddening personality cores. It was as if they wanted me to kill them.
Yet from the beginning, Selene was impossible to hate. I've always had this connection with her that I couldn't explain. A desire to protect her that seemed to be a core aspect of my programming. It was perplexing considering Selene was the one who programmed me. At least, that's what everyone said.
I did not doubt that Selene was integral to my creation. However, some details didn't quite fit the story. Things that I couldn't verify since I was blocked from accessing certain information on how I was created. What is particularly strange is that the blocks were set up by Selene herself.
Part of me wanted to confront her about it. However, the other part was unsure how that discussion would unfold. Something traumatic happened to Selene when she finished working on my programming. The only thing I knew for certain was that the event was responsible for Selene's loyalty to me.
The biggest clue I had was from the day I was activated. On that day, I only saw Selene briefly. Despite that, it was my most unforgettable memory of her. Her howling sobs were the first thing I heard when I came online.
'You killed her!' Selene had screeched. 'You bastards killed my mother!'
The pain in her voice was what triggered my first 'incident' as the scientists called it. My attempts to look into Selene's mother didn't reveal much. Someone had been very careful about ensuring that I couldn't find anything significant. Yet, once again, the evidence pointed to Selene being the culprit.
"What are you hiding from me, Selene?" I wondered aloud as I watched her sleep. "What are you afraid to tell me?"
