“Pass me the butter please Ciara.” I looked up from slurping the bowl of soup in front of me, I pushed the tub over too my dad who gave me a little nod before piling an unhealthy amount on his piece of bread.
It’s just been my dad and I lately, My dad was the Sherriff of the town and I have to say, It does get to his head a lot. My mum worked with a travel company meaning she had to go on business trips out of the state a lot and this one was going on for a month.
“How was work?” I asked, If my dad loved anything more than his job, It was talking about his job and surely ranting about the ‘scrummy little teenagers’ who always get up to trouble.
“Now that you’ve mentioned work..” He started as I sighed mentally slapping myself for starting the never ending conversation, ‘woo whoo, way to go Ciara.’
“That trouble maker Braxton Creed is back in town.” I nearly choked on my soup, I’m not sure if you can choke on soup, But I surely was stunned. Braxton Creed? The last time his name was ever spoken was in Freshman year.
I remember sitting at my lunch table with my best friends Lexi and Hunter when two police officers came into the cafeteria taking Braxton Creed away. He wasn’t arrested, but he wasn’t ever seen again. Some people said he was threatened to leave town, Others said he had left to join the circus.
“Are you being serious?” My dad nodded as he wiped the soup from his moustache, I remember how every night my dad would complain about all the things Braxton got up too, No one ever knew about his family and he never hung out with anyone but this blonde kid named Jax.
“It’s unbelievable, now that I’m the sheriff I have to deal with that brat even more.” I rolled my eyes, See what I mean when I say my dad gets ahead of himself being the sheriff? It’s like he thinks he’s the only one who takes care of the town.
“How long has he been back?” My dad shrugged then slurped he rest of his soup. If Braxton Creed came back surely there was going to be a lot of gossip and rumors. Braxton was that kid everyone stayed away from, Rumors had it that he’s apart of a gang and sells drugs. I doubt it though.
“I have a proposal for you Ciara,” I sighed and ducked my head down, Now another disadvantage of being the Sheriff’s daughter is that because I’m ‘Mini Underwood’, I have to take up duties. Of course not without bargaining up a little cash may I add.
“Go on.” My dad gave me a grin before he pulled out a note pad and paper.
“I swear if this has anything to do with Braxton Creed though..” I started trying to give off my best warning glare.
“Don’t swear Ciara.” He said with a disapproving look. I quickly muttered an apology before he began.
“Three words, Befriend Braxton Creed.” I gaped at him, Befriend him? Become friends with Braxton Creed? The boy who everyone stays away from? The one who ran away to join the circus? I think not.
“Nope. No. Not happening. How do you say no in Spanish?” My dad sighed and ran his hand through his balding hair. I’m not sure if it was the fact he was going to turn 50 soon or if it was all the work stress causing him to lose hair.
“Ciara please, I can’t keep up with all my work while stalking Braxton Creed like a hawk.” I can’t, I couldn’t. I’m just a nerd too him, Everyone is technically a nerd too Braxton Creed.
“Dad, I might end up dead! I could end up sniffing coke as well!” I cried, What if he really was a drug dealer and I was found running down the streets naked at 2am after smoking a big pot of marijuana, I’m not even sure if I’m using the correct terms!
“I hope your talking about coca cola.” I wish I was too, I wish I was.
“Please Ciara, Only until I feel that he isn’t going to do anything dangerous. Just tell me what he’s doing after school, who he’s hanging out with.”
“And what type of underwear he wears?” I muttered knowing my dad heard me either way. I mean If I had to observe him like this I might as well find out what shampoo he uses.
“Look, I know it’s a lot too ask for, but I have to trust my gut feeling that he’s back in town for a reason.” I stayed still for a moment. Should I? I don’t want to get attention from becoming his friend, If it was even possible.
“Okay fine.” I finally said aloud. The look on my dads face was priceless, He must have thought I was going to reject. Maybe I could learn something from him I guess.
“That’s my girl!” He yelled bringing me in for a bear hug. I struggled trying to escape the father grip.
“Dad. Please.” I muttered as he ruffled my hair messing it all up. There goes the 20 minuets I spent curly that flock of brown mess. He let go of me then looked at me with a proud father smile.
“I know you won’t let me down kiddo.” I looked down and nodded. Let’s just pray I won’t.
~
“Kitty.” A little blonde girl said too me as she looked up at me on my way to school
“No..” I awkwardly replied as she tilted her head to the side. I’m pretty sure I don’t look like a cat.
“Pussy?” My eyes widened, Oh boy I hope she was still talking about cats.
“Where’s your mummy?” I asked bending down to her level. She seemed about 4 from the way her pigtails hung off her head and her fringe clipped with a pink hairclip.
“Mummy?” She bursted out into tears while her thumb hung out of her mouth. Oh my god, I’m not good with kids at all. I patted her head as she started crying harder. I was definitely going to be late for school now.
“Lily!” A voice yelled, I looked up as a blonde lady ran towards us. Her eyes were fixed on the sobbing 4 year old.
“Thank you.” She muttered too me as she collected the little girl in her arms. I gave her a small smile, Well more like a look with my lips pressed into a thin line. I watched as the mother and daughter walked away, Well that was a great way to start my morning.
I was now running 5 minutes late to my first period and I was barely even half way to school. I cursed myself for taking the extra 10 minutes to make chocolate chip waffles, Not the brightest idea.
I made it to school running 20 minutes late now sitting in the principals office. I guess the principal wasn’t to impressed either. I’m just praying he doesn’t tell my dad.
“Well Ciara, I can’t just let you off, But I have a solution.” I nodded as the principal bobbed his head down grabbing out a file then throwing it on the desk.
“I have a new student out in the office, Braxton Creed if you remember. He’s lacking behind in Math’s and we agreed that it isn’t such a good idea to let him skip everything he needs to know to proceed the next level.” I slowly shook my head, Please not lead too where this I going please don’t..
“You can tutor him for a month or get detentions for a month.” I bit my lip, I’m not sure which one is worse right now.
“I’ll take the detentions.” I quickly murmured knowing that wasn’t what he wanted to hear.
“Great, Tutoring starts tomorrow. Talk to him about it.”
“Bu-“
“Your excused.” I gaped at the principal, So I have to become friends with Braxton and now tutor him? Great. I think I might as well take that coke now.
