Chapter 1

I groan softly as I pull my last large, white suitcase out of my room.  I set it down on the carpet and turn back around to stare sadly into the large, empty room, with only a large bed and a dresser left in it; its blue walls absent of the paintings that once hung on it.  I shut the door softly before turning around seeing Mitchell carrying my bag down the marble staircase.

“You really don’t need to carry that,” I say hopping down the stairs.  I look up at the sad grey eyes of my friend and his messy blond hair.  “Here let me get it, I say while trying to reach the suitcase from on top of his head.  He grunts and lifts it higher.  I sigh but continue down the stairs.   “Why do you have to be so tall Mitchell?  Being tall and stubborn isn’t good for the soul,” I grumble hopping down for the last step.

“Why do you have to leave?” he asks with his eyebrows raised.  I sigh and run a hand through my thick, auburn curls.

“Because my stepfather just died and my mom needs some type of comfort, enough said?” I say angrily, snatching the suitcase from his shoulder and rolling it out the door before he can get another word in.  We’ve been through this conversation three times over the past week, and it’s honestly getting on my nerves.  Why can’t he see that I need to help the woman that gave birth to me?

“Aw, come on Aurie!” he calls from behind me.

“Don’t call me that, only my friends can,” I huff as I pull the suitcase down the last cobbled steps.  I squint my eyes against the too bright California sun with clouds dotting the sky haphazardly.

“Look, I’m sorry.  I shouldn’t have opened up my huge mouth… again.”  Mitchell says touching my shoulder to turn me around.  I sigh but look up at his grey eyes.

“Fine, you’re forgiven,” I say folding my arms across my chest.  I flick a piece of his blond hair off his forehead just to have it fall back down.  His face lights up and his arms go around me for a bear hug.  “Can’t breathe you sasquatch,” I manage to get out.  Mitch laughs and sets me back down on the ground.

“I’m going to miss you Aurie,” Mitchell says blinking his eyes fast.  I look away guilty.  I hate having such an impact on mortals’ lives.  It’s not fair of me to leave them being all sad and depressed while I just float there until I feel like coming back.

“Aw, I’m going to miss you to Mitch,” I say while hugging him around the waist.  I sigh as his green apple scent folds itself around me.

“What am I going to do without you?” he asks and I sigh.

“I don’t know, you’re going to be useless without me,” I sigh, joking with him.

“You got that right,” he huffs.  I pull back laughing.

“Miss Luthers, we must be going if you are to make it to the airport in time,” says the elderly chauffeur coming around the side to pick up my bags.  I look him over quickly noticing the many liver spots dotting his hands and his white fluffy hair only in certain places.  Winkles surround his brown eyes.

“Oh no, I’ll get those,” I say shooing his hands away.  He smiles gratefully at me before turning to head back to the limo.  I sigh and look up at the mansion again.  Who would have known that dad would actually invent something useful?  I look at the fountain once more watching the water trickle from the flower in the woman’s hand.  I look away with a grimace before switching it to a smile for my childhood friend.  “Well, I guess this is goodbye?” I trail off in a question as I go in to hug him once more.  He shakes his head furiously against me making him seem like a disgruntled puppy.

“No, not goodbye, see you later,” he says making me chuckle.

I pull back and smile hugely at him.  “I’m going to miss you Mitchey,” I mumble.  “You’re the greatest friend I’ve ever had,” I say and I actually mean it.

“I’m going to miss you too Aurie, and you’re the only friend I could ever have,” he mumbles making me smile even larger.

“So I guess this is good-“

“Don’t you dare say the ‘g’ word,” he groans making me laugh.

“See you later alligator,” I say picking up my bags and walk away from him; the wheels miraculously hitting each little pebble making my arms hurt.  I slide my bags into the limo and look back once more at Mitchell’s sad face.  His grey eyes look stormy with unshed tears covering them and the wind teasing his blond hair gently.

I take in a deep breath and step into the leather interior car.  I lay my head into my hands trying to think calm thoughts.  I rub right above my bright blue eye where a headache is forming.  The limo’s engine jolts to life and my heart falls to my stomach.  As we pull out of the driveway, I quickly stand up and open the sunroof and I look back at Mitchell.

“See you later idiot!” I call out sticking a hand out to cover the sun.  I blink quickly to keep the tears from falling… stupid wind.

“See you soon dinosaur breath!” he calls back chuckling.

“Please take your seat miss, it’s not safe,” the chauffer says.  I wave once more before sliding into my seat.  I really hope that I see him soon; hopefully before my 16th birthday.  I swallow and look out the window.  One month, that’s all I have left. I wonder how I’ll die this time.  Well, one thing is for certain, I don’t want Mitchell to see it.
