~Rumi's POV~

By the end of the day, the little fox looked on the verge of collapse. From her petite build, pale complexion and labored breathing from slight exertion, I had a feeling the little fox didn't make it out very much. Despite being very obviously exhausted from trying to keep up with me all day, she didn't complain once and managed to neatly arrange my schedule. Despite not having had experience with a smart phone she managed to figure it out after a few moments of playing with it. At one point I thought I saw her completely disassemble and reassemble it when we had a moment to stop.

I was more curious than ever to see what kind of items she'd crafted and why no one had hired her as a support specialist. Though the industry was overrun by men and she was soft spoken so she probably just got bulldozed anytime she applied or overlooked because she was quiet.

As I was about to tell her she could go home for the day, my phone started to ring. I glanced down at the screen and scowled, it was one of the assholes at the Hero Public Safety Commission. Most likely calling to see if I'd fired the little fox yet.

"What?" I asked in an irritated tone as I answered the call. The little fox was busy on her phone color coding and organizing my schedule for the next two weeks.

"I've got another candidate for you to try out tomorrow." A bored voice drawled, assuming I'd already fired the little fox.

"No need, I'll keep this one." I retorted.

"What? You're serious?" They sounded genuinely amazed, dropping their usual snooty tone.

"Yeah, I like her. She'll work out just fine." I shrugged. A small smile quirked at the corners of my lips as I saw the little fox adding some cute little animated sticky notes to her digital calendar to remind herself of things. She added a cute little bunny one for an ungodly hour in the morning that said 'prepare lunch for Rumi'.

"But-...she's so mediocre ... are you sure you don't want someone else?" The snooty tone had returned.

I noticed the little fox's ears droop slightly, her hearing keen enough to hear their insult. "You're mediocre!" I growled and hung up as anger suddenly welled up inside of me.

The little fox turned to me, her emerald eyes wide in awe. Her ears were still drooping slightly, obviously upset by their harsh words.

"Don't listen to assholes!" I snapped.

She jumped. "O-okay, I'm s-sor-."

"Don't apologize for assholes either!" I growled.

"EEP!" She squealed adorably. "O-okay. G-got it."

I roughly poked her in the back, pressing hard on her spine to make sure the bone was there, "oh good you do have a backbone, I was going to tell you to get one, but it just looks like you need to toughen it up a bit."

She looked thoroughly confused and I realized then the metaphor had gone soaring right over her head. "...okay..." She responded nervously.

I noticed her open her phone and start typing 'stretches to toughen up backbone' and I let out a sigh. "...not literally, little fox..."

Her cheeks flushed pink and she closed the app and tucked the phone into her small plush carrot shaped purse.

I shook my head before cracking a faint smile and reaching out to ruffle her hair. My hand grazed her ears, they were incredibly soft and fluffy. "You did good today, little fox. Go home and get some rest. I'll see you in the morning."

She let out a cute little 'oof' sound as I accidentally unbalanced her not realizing she was not as secure and stable on her feet as she was pretending to be. I reached out to steady her before she could topple over and her face flushed with color once more.
