As I key in the button to the gate of my house, I take a deep breath and try to ease my thoughts. I didn't know why but I had this nagging feeling that I was coming home to something bad. Though it was probably just an instinct now to think of the worse. I drive forward and make my way towards the house before parking in the garage. I notice that there was a black Sedan that didn't belong to anyone in the house. So we had a visitor, maybe a distant relative?
Opening the door, I look out towards the backyard and see some of the gardeners. I wave hello to them and make my way towards the kitchen. On the island counter, I see a folder with papers laid out neatly. The words, Project Guardian plastered on in bold letters. Against my temptation, I decide not to be nosy and continue walking towards the front of the house.
"I'm home." I announce surprised that Ken was nowhere to be found. Seconds later I hear footsteps coming down the stairs.
"Jesus Amara, would it kill you to answer your phone?" Ken approaches me with a furious look. It was honestly weird to see Ken so worked up about something, he was a pretty easy-going guy. I knew I had really messed up by not showing up on time as he asked.
"I'm sorry-"
"Amara we had a deal, I needed you here right after school." The look on his face told me that whatever was going on, was serious. I sat down on the brown couch and sulked like a scolded little child.
"I know, you told me to be here after school. But Felix had bought Jack and me tickets to the new Spider-man movie. I couldn't say no, not after seeing how hard they're trying to be there for me." Ken's face softens and he sighs before taking a seat next to me.
"Just please, next time don't turn off your phone. I was freaking out over here." Ken takes off his blazer and fans himself as a giggle escapes my lips. He smiles and looks down at his hands. "Spider-man huh? I wanted to go see it too but I don't think I can bring myself to do it." His tone was bittersweet and I knew what he was thinking. I put a comforting hand on his back and nod my head. He grabs my hand and exhales before speaking. "I'm glad you went out and spent time with friends, Felix and Jack seem like decent guys." Ken was so understanding and I knew I would have to make it up to him later.
"Well, if it isn't my favorite troublemaker." I turn towards the source of the British voice.
"Nick?" The light brown-haired man had emerged from the kitchen. I stand up and make my way towards him, confused as to how I had missed him. "What are you doing?" He brings me in for a hug and smiles before patting my head.
"Well, your uncle and aunt were here to discuss business matters." He takes a bite from the apple he had in his hand. I turn towards Ken and question what he meant by business matters. However, before Ken could answer Nick speaks as he guided me back towards the couch.
"With the tragic events of Miranda and Ben's passing, the CEO position is open. Naturally, it would go to the owners of the business which is currently your father and aunt... until you turn eighteen of course." He looks up at Ken and smiles as we stay quiet and let him continue. "However, Ken and your aunt Lisa believe that I should fill the role for the time being. We wanted you to be a part of the meeting because we wanted your opinion." He takes another bite from his apple and I nod my head in understanding.
Nicholas was practically family, he had interned with my parents since college. He was managing most of the business affairs since he was the president of the company. I had no objections for him filling the role of CEO for the time being, he would no doubt have the best intentions for the business.
"I trust Ken's judgment and I know you'll do what's best for the company. There was no need for my opinion." I reassure them as Nick finishes his apple with a smile.
