Before the advent of the internet, their reunion would have stayed private, and nobody would have realised that the well-known playwright Nick Gregory had ended up kissing his ex-wife (the one about whom he had written that infamous play) again on Christmas Day. For a few hours, Nick and Cara really thought that they could keep "the incident," as Cara had begun to refer to it, to themselves. They were staying at a remote hotel in Switzerland after all. So what were the chances of this getting out?
Jayden had moved out of her suite, of course.
And Cherry had kicked Nick out of hers once he had confessed what had happened. He was now staying in Cara's suite because all the other rooms of the hotel were occupied (and to be absolutely honest, he couldn't afford to stay in one of them with the money that he was making as a playwright).
Cara had taken him in, but only under the condition that he would sleep on the couch.
When he heard that, he sat down on the couch, placing his suitcase right next to him. The couch was quite comfortable and had probably cost a lot of money, unlike the dorm room couches he was used to from his college days. "Seriously?"
She was adamant about this. Why didn't he realise that she was angry with him... and even more so with herself? Why had they done what they had done and gotten into this mess in the first place? She had been in a great relationship with Jayden until Nick had waltzed into her life again. "No matter what Jayden thinks or what your girlfriend thinks, you and I are not together or getting back together! Apart from that, I want to be on the first flight that takes me out of here!"
"Good luck with that! I mean, it's Christmas Day and so on. Come to think of it, perhaps we should be celebrating..."
"As you know, I don't celebrate Christmas!" Cara interrupted him. She was losing her patience fast.
"Right, I had almost forgotten that. You never told me why..."
"And I won't!" Cara cut him off. "Why don't you make himself useful and help me. We need to get on a flight home as soon as possible and leave this nightmare behind us."
"Or we could just stay and try to sort this out."
"I don't think that either Jayden or your Cherry will be in a forgiving mood today."
"I'm not talking about them. We need to make sense of what happened here this morning before we talk to them."
Cara raised an eyebrow. "Look, we should try to forget that stupid kiss. There is no 'us' because we are not going to get back together and repeat all the stupid mistakes we made in the past."
"Is that all you have to say about our relationship? That it was a mistake?" Nick asked her. What surprised her was that he sounded offended, even hurt. "We were married for a while, you know."
"In retrospect, it was a mistake because it didn't work out. And right now, you're about to become a father, so you should focus on Cherry and the baby and not on the past. Stop running away from that!"
"I will as soon as you stop running away from the fact that we're still attracted to each other. So 'we' are certainly far from over." And with that, he grabbed her and kissed her again forcefully.
The kiss was so unexpected that it surprised her.
"You know, I'm really tired of you calling all the shots. In the past, our relationship was all about what you wanted. That's why it didn't work out and why it ended with me lashing out at you. From now on, I want to have a say in all of this as well. Say that you don't enjoy this, that you don't want it as much as I want it..." Nick mumbled as his soft lips wandered to her neck.
