You were spending your time shopping at the markets when a voice came from behind you.
"Hola, Y/n. What are you up to?" You jumped slightly startled by a hot breath ghosting against your neck. Turning around you spotted hazel eyes looking back at you.
"You scared me, Camilo," you chuckled, "I was just shopping for dinner. You can help if you want to." You grinned at your friend. Your cheeks were hotter than usual because of how close you two were but it seemed he hadn't noticed. He rolled his eyes but grabbed the grocery list anyway. While he scanned through it trying to figure out what you had already gathered, you took the bag full of fruits and vegetables off of your shoulder.
"Do you even need help? It seems like you're only missing two items." He looked up at you confused. To answer you simply threw the bag at him almost hitting him in the head.
"Sí, but you can help me with the bag." You smirked while he tried not to drop anything. When everything was in place he looked at you triumphally. Rolling your eyes you took the, now creased, paper from his hands and went further down the street with Camilo following close behind you.
"What're you making for dinner, hermosa/o?" he asked when you started heading home.
"I'm not sure, but my parents aren't home yet so I'll have to start without them," you sighed. Cooking was never something you were particularly interested in. It was alright, useful for sure, but standing in one place for half an hour wasn't appealing. Especially alone.
"I can help you," Camilo offered. "I'm done with my chores for the day and I'm sure Abuela won't be mad at me for helping somebody."
"Okay, but can you cook?" You asked frowning. It had hit you that even if you had known each other for a few years now you had never heard him mention cooking. Besides Julieta's, of course.
"You are looking at the best cook in this village!" The boy jumped in place but the weight of the groceries overpowered him almost causing him to trip. You chuckled while he sent you a death glare that changed into a defeated smile right after. His hair bounced with every step until you reached your house.
"I'm going to believe you. But I'm not taking the blame if you burn something!" You warned him with a smile. You reached into the grocery bag to retrieve your keys. When you did you put one in the keyhole and opened the wooden door. It creaked loudly and you led Camilo into the kitchen grabbing aprons for the both of you. He put the bag on the table and looked around.
"It's been a while since I've been here," he mumbled putting the apron on. "Have you repainted the walls?"
"Yeah, like a month ago. Can you help unpack the bag?" You asked. He smiled and nodded before coming closer. You pulled out a few items when your hand brushed against Camilo's. You froze for a moment. You glanced over at Camilo who turned his head away, but you had spotted the smirk that formed on his face. Smiling to yourself you stopped putting the groceries on the table and instead started placing them in the fridge.
Camilo followed suit as soon as the bag was fully empty.
"Well, we could've just put them there from the beginning," he chuckled.
"You're right. That was stupid," you giggled nervously fixing your clothes. There wasn't anything wrong with them but why should that stop you?
"It wasn't that stupid." He moved a bit closer to you leaning against the kitchen counter. His eyes shined from the dim light provided by the candles. "At least we spent more time together, hermosa/o."
Your breath quickened. You fumbled with your hands behind your back as you tried to avoid eye contact. An involuntary smile crept its way onto your face as you looked away. Heat rushed to your cheeks.
"You're right." A few silent seconds have passed before you clapped your hands. In those few seconds filled with silence, Camilo managed to shorten the distance between you two even more than before. But the sudden noise startled him, making him straighten up. "We should start preparing the actual food, shouldn't we?" You asked, barely above a whisper
"I guess so," Camilo muttered. His face seemed focused, but after a moment the serious expression was replaced by a mischievous grin. "So what are we going to cook exactly?"
You inhaled. It was difficult to focus.
"Maybe a... maybe arepas?" You stuttered turning around to fetch the flour from the cabinet. "And a salad? There was salad on the list, right? I didn't forget to put it there, did I?" You put it on the countertop and turned to the boy.
"No, it was there, I can assure you. It almost fell out of the bag when I tripped." He smiled brightly putting a hand on your shoulder. You sighed in relief and smiled back at him. He reached his other hand behind you with a smirk. Before you could react Camilo threw the flour in your face. You coughed a couple of times.
"Camilo!" You chuckled it wiping it off with a smile. Camilo was standing there laughing before he himself got a full fist of flour in the face. Now it was your turn to cackle. That's how the flour war started. In the end, you needed to cancel the arepas and settled only on the salad.
"We need to clean this up," you giggled looking at the mess you've made. Camilo groaned dramatically.
"Can we do that later?" He asked with pleading eyes. You rolled your eyes but nodded your head. Cleaning didn't seem like fun. Instead, you brought out two kitchen boards and knives. You both started cutting the vegetables.
The room was filled with awkward silence. You were standing next to Camilo, your shoulders brushing against each other from time to time. Your hands were shaking slightly as you tried to suppress the smile creeping onto your lips. The only sound was the cutting. That was until you heard soft humming from the shapeshifter. He had a nice voice and you started swinging to it from side to side.
He chuckled. You grinned and glanced at him. He stopped chopping up vegetables and was instead staring at you with a smile. You made eye contact and both froze in place. His eyes were locked on yours for a while before glimpsing a little lower, at your lips.
You fidgeted with your apron while he leaned in closer to you. And closer, and closer. Finally, his lips met yours. He put his hands on your cheeks gently. You put one hand on his shoulder while the other one softly played with his curls. You felt him smile into the kiss and you couldn't help but do the same.
When you parted you started chuckling and giggling like idiots. Camilo embraced you in a tight hug and rested his head on your shoulder trying to calm the laughs down. You two stayed in that position for at least a couple of minutes when you broke the silence:
"We do need to clean the kitchen, you know?" Camilo groaned and buried his head deeper into the crook of your neck.
