The morning light reflected onto Mirabel's glasses as she moved around helping the townsfolk. It has been about a day since she'd been found. There still were a few columns standing but most of the lot was being quickly cleaned.
"Y/n!" Mirabel yelled to you when she say you sprinting to her. You were carrying a few old shovels. You beamed stopping in front of her.
"Hi... Mira," you mumbled in between breaths. "Sorry I couldn't be here earlier, but it was strangely difficult to find these old things." You gestured to the spades before putting them on the ground.
"It's fine," Mirabel chuckled, "thanks for bringing them. Could you help Camilo remove the rubble?" She pointed to the boy who played with his shovel a few meters away from you.
"On it!" You said grabbing a tool and running towards Camilo. You jumped a few broken walls accidentally bumping into him. He yelped letting his shovel fall onto the ground.
"Sorry," you laughed. It took him a second to recognize your voice but as soon as he did a smile tugged on his lips. He turned to you hugging you tightly and spinning you around. You giggled as he put you down.
"Finally someone fun," he said, "so much had happened in the last few days. I'm exhausted."
"Well, when we're finished cleaning the lot, we can go eat together. How does that sound?" You asked. Camilo nodded his head rapidly before picking up his shovel and going back to work. You joined, starting to chitchat with him. It seemed like you hadn't spoken in ages.
The sun started to lower, its heat burning your backs. Most of the work was already done and the only things that were necessary final touches were for the adults to finish.
"I think we're done here," you sighed with relief whipping the sweat off of your forehead. Camilo nodded leaning against you. "Stop," you chuckled, "we're gonna trip!" In response, Camilo hugged your waist causing you to lose your balance. You wrapped your hands around his shoulders scowling him with laughter. You goofed around a bit before Camilo left you to talk to Mirabel about getting a break. You giggled softly covering your flushed face and started walking to the side.
"Watch out!" You heard a panicked voice shout from behind you. When you turned you noticed one of the still-standing walls get closer and closer. You froze in place unable to do anything other than stare at the falling object. The world seemed to slow down. Voices and sounds of the forest became muffled. But at the last moment, you felt somebody yank you out of the wall's way. Everything went back to normal as the person pulled away grabbing your face.
"Is everything okay? Are you hurt?" Camilo asked still searching for any cuts or bruises.
"No," you answered sheepishly placing your hands on his. He gave up on searching after a few more seconds and pulled you into a tight hug. You wrapped your hands around his torso resting your head on his shoulder. You played with his hair while listening to Mirabel's faint voice as she calmed the situation down. "Thank you, Camilo. I'm okay now. Come on, let's eat," you gently backed away taking his hands into your own. You walked off into the forest waving to Mirabel when you passed her by. Camilo took the food.
The walk wasn't long. It was a pleasant few minutes of silence you spent. The townspeople's voices blended into the background slowly giving in to the rustle of the trees. You arrived at a lake. The cool breeze brushed your face as you sat down. Camilo sat next to you pulling out two arepas from the basket he brought.
"Do you want an arepa?" He asked handing it to you.
"Yep," you said taking it from him and taking a bite. A few birds flew over your heads catching your attention. While you were looking up you felt something being placed on your lap. When you looked down you spotted Camilo laying his head there. A chuckle escaped your lips and you started playing with his hair gently. He grabbed your hand and placed it on his cheek sighing deeply. "Is something the matter?" Camilo hummed avoiding your gaze.
"I... really care about you, you know that?" He questioned? You felt your face heating up when you nodded. You tried looking away but Camilo placed his arepa on his chest and put a hand on your cheek making you look at him. He softly stroked it with his thumb.
"Why?" You asked, your voice husky. Camilo shrugged.
"I just do. You're very important to me, I'm scared of what would happen if you... disappeared one day, or something," he mumbled. "I don't want to lose you." You stayed silent only admiring his eyes. Your lips pressed into a straight line before they changed into a soft smile.
"You're not gonna lose me, Camilo. I promise," you kissed his forehead. Before you could sit up normally, Camilo straightened kissing your lips. You placed your hands on his cheeks while he placed his on your waist. You both sat up, hugging each other tighter. You run your fingers through his curls before pulling away. He sighed, this time in content, earning a giggle from you. "Do you think we should go back now?"
"Nah, they'll be fine without us. Do you think I could get another kiss?"
"Sure," you giggled before kissing him again.
