Chapter 30

Jamie

"Calareanne, what did the doctor say?"

"About Carlo?"

"Yes, and you. Is there any threat to either of your lives?"

"No, I'm perfectly out of danger. The poison in my body has been neutralized after which they injected it in Carlo." She said.

"Oh, its been quite so time right. Do you think we should go and check on Carl?" I said, she agreed to this and we were now walking towards Carl's operation theatre. The doctor was just coming out as I we reached.

She was wearing a mask, so I couldn't read any of her expressions, I didn't know if she was smiling or frowning. It was blank just like the way I was from within. My heart was beating way too heard, I felt my hands shaking in my pocket when the doctor took off her mask.

"Good news Jamie, Carl will live—" she said, but before she could I complete, I jumped forward and shook her hand. Thanking her, for everything she'd done for Carl, Calareanne and me.

"Jamie, there's bad news as well." The doctor said.

"Doctor, don't worry. Nothing can get worse than what happened to me a while ago. Please tell me what it is."

"Jamie, Carl's lower body was completely paralyzed. It may have been because of standing for long hours yesterday, or some activity. The cells in his lower body are eaten away internally. He may not be able to stand again. His lower body will not be functional as his upper body, not even near functional to be honest."

"So... does that mean that he has to spend the rest of his life on—"

"Yes, a wheelchair."

"Can't you do anything?"

"No Jamie, nothing in the near future, we have to give it time. The poison has been neutralized too but he will continue to have weakness for a few days."

"Okay doctor. Can we go meet him?"

"Not yet Jamie, he's still unconscious."

"Okay doctor, I have to inform you a few things before it gets out of hand, I'm sure your hospital will reach out to you but its my duty to inform you" I said to her.

"Doctor, we found the person who attempted to murder both Carl and Calareanne. They're in police custody right now. I have to issue my statement by sunset today. Please give me a written statement regarding the medical details and please explain it to the both of us so that we can get things settled with the police and the lawyer."

"Sure Jamie."

"Before you start, can I please record whatever you say, because I might forget a few important details."

"Yes Jamie" she responded, so I took out my phone and started recording.

"Calarie and Carl both had the same poison in their blood. The poison was given to Carl in high dosages in a short period of time. So his cells didn't have the time to produce antibodies that can fight the poison and the poison had spread almost completely in his blood, particularly his lower body. Calareanne, in contrast, had the same poison given to her, in small dosages over a long time, so she had developed the antibodies. Since both of them had the same blood groups, we injected some of the blood into Carl to aid his cells to fight the poison. It succeeded." She paused for a second after which she continued.

"Loop hole 1 was that, Carl was given a small amount of the antitode to paralysis, not the poison but paralysis. That's why he didn't get completely paralysed, and could move his hands very minutely. The drug is a quite powerful one too. Its lucky he didn't die.
Loop hole 2 was that, Calareanne was given the posion in long periods of time, I think the people didn't have proper knowledge in medicine. That loop hole is what actually saved Carl today."

"Thank you so much, Doctor. I actually have something I want you to check." I said and got up.

I went straight to my car, got the packet that I'd got on the prescription of Mr. Lentas' friend, who initially posed to be the doctor, and went back up.

"Doctor, Is.. is.. this the drug?" I said, panting.

"Yes, this is it. How'd you know?"

"That man, he prescribed it and I didn't know his intentions. What would've happened if I'd given it to Carl?"

"He'd have died. This medicine is extremely strong, any more of this medicine in addition to what was given earlier would have killed him."

"Jamie, Jamie.. I told you I'd seen this before right. I saw in my dad's room, ughhh.. give me a second.. it was on the day I gave you both the ice cream. I didn't realize I was.... Oh... he probably mixed it in his ice cream. I remember him particularly telling me to give Carl the vanilla one. I just followed him blindly. I'm sorry." Calarie said, keeping her hands on her eyes.

"I've done that my whole life, don't worry Calarie." I said to her, soon after which I looked at the doctor, "Thank you so much ma'am, please let me know when I can meet Carl, and when I can collect the statement. Thank you again!" I said as I was leaving the room with Calarie.

"Calarie, there's still actually one big problem. I have to pay for the hospital bills, but my mom has frozen my card and I just can't access it. I don't know what to do. I told them that I'll pay it soon but.. I still haven't."

"Carl, don't worry. You are like a brother to me. After all that you've done for my family, this is the most minimal thing you can ask for." She said as she proceeded to the counter to pay for the bills. Thankfully, her card wasn't frozen and it worked all right. I was relieved. All that remained was Carl gaining consciousness.
