Mirabel was happy. She was happy and so so proud of Antonio. Casita gave Antonio a gift. He could talk to animals, and Mirabel was so glad he could speak to his friends now.

Mirabel was jealous. She was jealous and so so angry with her familia. It wasn't fair. Antonio got a gift and she didn't. And the family photo. The family photo. She watches as her family all grouped together and began demonstrating their gifts. All of them together, all except her.

Dolores heard everything. Or at least almost everything. It was hard to miss anything when you have a tendency to gossip and the ability to hear anything within the entirety of the village and some of the outlying mountains.

So it was no surprise to her when she heard Mirabel slipping away during the family photo. Dolores could hear her heart hammering in her chest, and the quickening sound of Mirabel's breathing.

She should do something, go after her cousin and check if she was okay. She should but-

"Hola Dolores, have you seen Isabella?" Dolores felt all of the air rush out of her lungs as her eyes met warm hazel ones. Mariano. How could she not have heard him coming??

"Ah! Oh um. Hola Mariano! Um no, I haven't seen her, she might have been with Camilo....."

As Dolores' whispers trail off as she noticed how intently Mariano was looking at her. Maybe anyone else wouldn't have heard, but she heard him let out a quiet hum.

With a large smile, Mariano said in a gentle voice (Dolores loved that about him, how he never raised his voice when he didn't have to) "Well, I just saw Camilo entertaining some of the village children, so she's not with him. Would you like to come with me to try and find her?"

Dolores felt her heart racing, and she was sure that even without super hearing Mariano could hear the rushing of her blood. Oh yeah, Mirabel would be fine. She always was.

With that, Dolores accepted the offered arm of Mariano.

Meanwhile:
Mirabel let out a soft sob into her pillow. Even her crying couldn't block out the sounds of pure joy coming from the celebration. The celebration where her whole family was, all except her.

Casita was worried of course. The quick succession in which the tiles rapped against the ground let the sobbing girl be aware of that.

It was so unfair! It was like she wasn't even part of the family.

Oh.

Oh.

It was like that wasn't it?

Mirabel felt like her skin was covered in sand all of a sudden, like her body was too hot. She felt the air dissipate from her lungs and her tears fall faster. She couldn't make a sound as the painful realisation set it. She wasn't part of that family. Last name and blood meant nothing. Mirabel wanted to scream, but all she could bring herself to do was curl up on her side, the gentle sounds of Casita her only comfort as she drifted off to sleep.

——————————————————————————————-

In the small village of Encanto, a celebration was taking place in honour of a young boy reviving his gift. Inside the house where the young boy lived, a teenage girl lay sleeping, curled up small, with her hair plastered to her face by her tears. No occupants of the house were aware as to what was taking place inside.

A door, long ignored, began to wake up. Engraved was a man and an hourglass, but as a candle (the candle?) began to glow brighter, the engraving had started to fade.

And as it faded, a golden hue had taken its place.

So the celebration continued. The family mingled with the townspeople, blissfully unaware of the girl who lay sleeping in her own tears and the happenings of the house.

The Casita had not given the girl a door when she was small. But now, now the girl would get a door of her own.
