A Door and A Rat

Mirabel woke to the sound of Casita carefully opening and closing the shutters on the nursery window.

"Casita? What is it? Is Antonio oka-"

Mirabel cut herself off as reality slammed in to her once again. Antonio wasn't in the nursery anymore. He got his gift, he got his own door.

Annoyed that she was still upset, Mirabel let out a huff as she carefully tossed her feet over the side of her bed. It was during these times that she was thankful that Dolores' room was soundproof.

"What Casita? It's-" Mirabel's whispers turned harsh. "CASITA ITS DARK OUTSIDE. ITS NIGHTTIME STILL." She left out a sharp sound of annoyance when she noticed the time.

Too early to wake up and too late to be awake.

Casita used her moment of distraction to bring Mirabel's attention to the nursery room door way.

Opened just a crack, with enough light to spill in, Mirabel saw a small rat, staring right at her.

Mirabel blinked. The rant blinked back. It occurred to her that this rat could be one of Antonio's friends, and that he sent him to check on her. It would explain why the rat hadn't run yet.

"Hello there, are you one of Antonio's?" Whispered Mirabel softly. The rat gave no reaction.

Carefully Mirabel crept closer. She didn't particularly trust this rat not to leave droppings in the nursery.

Just as she was about to reach him, the rat dashed out the door, causing Mirabel to freeze in shock. But before she could move, the rat ran back in, only to repeat itself again and again. Behind her, Casitas tiles tinkled happily against the floor.

Mirabel took this as Initiative to follow the rat.

Probably not the best idea considering she now had to dash after something the size of a tennis ball in the dark.

Through halls, past bedrooms, Mirabel padded quickly after the rat, thankful that she was quick and quiet on her feet.

After seeming to run in circles a few times, the rat arrived at a hallway Mirabel barely remembered.

But with those almost forgotten memories, she felt the sensation of sand on her hands, a mans voice humming a lullaby, deep and broken the voice was not a beautiful sound, but it was filled with love. A warm glow of green filled her mind, and then it was gone.

The rat was waiting for her to pay attention before dashing into the dark corridor.

Stairs.

And more stairs.

And even more stairs.

Mirabel was going to kill that rat.

The stupid rat had led her to a flight of stairs, (THAT SHE DID NOT KNOW ABOUT) which led to a tower, (she didn't know about that either, how did she not notice a WHOLE TOWER??) and now she was following the stupid thing up way to many stairs, when all she really wanted to do was go to sleep.

But noooo. Listen to Casita, follow the rat! What's next? Mirabel did NOT want to know.

Or.... Maybe she did?

The rat had reached the top, Mirabel not too far behind. And at the top, sat a door. A glowing door.

A glowing door?

A glowing door?!

Mirabel felt all the air leave her lungs as Casita wrapped the railing around her in comfort. The rat let out several squeaks of excitement.

Mirabel couldn't believe it. A door. One of Casitas magic doors. Who was it for?

Oh wait. That was dumb. Of course it was for her! She was the only Madrigal without a gift.

With trembling hands, Mirabel carefully crept towards the door, stepping carefully past the rat to stretch her hand out to the doorknob.

As her hand made contact with the cool brass surface, the light of the door seemed to tremble and pulse before settling abruptly.

Mirabel gasped at the image the golden light had made.

AN: Okay! Chapter 3! Sort of a cliffhanger but hey! She saw her door. Well, like I keep saying comment and stuff. Also, I'm considering Mirabel getting a gift. I have a few ideas but comment some aswell. I'm sorry it's not written the best, but I hope you like it. Also, very short chapter, I'm sorry!
