"Jesus christ..." I mumbled as I looked at myself in the mirror smoothing the dress down with my hands. I hate wearing dresses. I had no time to dwell on it though as I heard the sound of Rafe quite literally stomping down the hallway . I had left my bedroom door cracked so after a surprisingly gentle knock he let himself in.
"I know the whole dress thing isn't your style but I just thought-" He began as he came through the doorway, cutting himself off as he stared at me for a moment. Silence hung in the air as he stood there taking in my appearance before clearing his throat. "I see Ruby already brought you the dress?"
I scoffed at him, "Save your speech for another day Rafe." I held my hair up to turn and admire the back of the dress in the mirror. I will admit it was at least flattering for how uncomfortable it was. "I'm guessing this isn't the last dress I'm going to be wearing?" I looked over at Rafe who was now leaning against the door frame.
"It really does look beautiful on you." He said, not answering my question knowing I already knew the answer. I scrunched my face in fake disgust hiding the fact that his compliment slightly flustered me. Rafe is honestly quite an attractive man. He's the kind of guy who I'd make eye contact with across the room and instantly get weak in the knees (as cliche as that sounds). But after working with him for years and seeing how he can get, a relationship past our complicated friendship isn't something I'd want to explore.
Rafe and I spoke for a few more minutes as he recited the still vague plan to me once more. His eyes never left me which left me only partially listening to what he was saying. Once he caught me up on everything he lingered for a moment before saying he was going to get someone to bring the car to the front. Rafe was driving us there instead of a guard because our host was very strict on the no guards rule. Only Rafe, Sam, and I were allowed which made me slightly nervous. I hated when our contacts set "rules" ahead of time. It always ended up going South once we go there but Rafe promised me I'd never have to handle a gun again...
I grabbed a small clutch and pinned my hair back on each side just to tame it a bit. And after slipping on the most uncomfortable heels I was ready to go. I made my way down the hall and to the front steps where Rafe and Sam were waiting down in the car. The window tint obscured my view of them both but I could just feel their eyes on me.
As I got into the car I made sure my scowl was prominent. Just going down the steps in these heels was hell on earth...how was I supposed to get through a whole night with them on. They felt two sizes two small and a few inches too tall. Not a good combination.
"You clean up nice." Sam commented from the back seat causing me to turn and face him. I could say the same to him as he was in a black suit with a white collared shirt beneath it. But do to the slight casual setting of the dinner he wasn't wearing a tie, instead his shirt was slightly unbuttoned making my eyes wander.
I scoffed at Sam, "Thanks." I said flatly trying to hide my emotions. Though it wasn't flirty per-say, I couldn't handle both him and Rafe complimenting me in one day. It was distracting whether I wanted it to be or not.
As my mind wandered, completely over-analyzing Sam's words, Rafe aggressively shifted into drive. I was forced to break eye contact with Sam and turn around to buckle my seat belt.
"You guys done talking?" His voice was edgy, venomous almost. He wasn't jealous was he?
Sam's seat-belt clicked. "Yes sir!" He practically shouted sarcastically. I looked over at Rafe as it got a laugh out of me. Rafe was smirking too as he adjusted the rear view mirror before hitting the gas.
As we drove I took the time to look over Rafe as well. He wore a white suit with a black turtle neck underneath. The wind coming in from his open window caused his usual slicked back hairstyle to become slightly messy. Strands hung around his face which he slicked back in place every once in a while, but they didn't stay there for long. I was in a trance watching him drive in silence. After a few miles, he looked over at me probably feeling my eyes boring into his soul. I smiled at him in response and he hesitated for a second before warmly smiling back. My stomach quite literally did a back flip to say the least. What is wrong with me today?!I must be ovulating.
