"Look, I didn't want to be half-blood..."

The first sign of an impending disaster was the smoke coming from behind my best friend. I wanted to tell her about it, but the next second Maggie disappeared into the crowd of dancing teenagers, heading for the exit. I looked around confused, but in the darkness that prevailed in the gym, I couldn't even recognize who was dancing next to me. I felt strong hands on my hips which set the rhythm of my movements as I tried to find my friend. I had to find her if only to make sure she was okay and I was delusional.

"Let's go get some air," I shouted into my boyfriend's ear, hoping he would understand the message.

Josh just nodded as he clasped our hands together. He started making his way among the dancing students until we finally found ourselves at the exit of the classroom. The doorway opened into a long corridor, lit only by two lamps. An unidentified shiver ran through my body. I trembled as I searched for his source, but everything indicated that Josh and I were alone. I squeezed his hand tighter, not understanding where this anxiety was coming from. I was so sure I saw smoke, but it seemed absurd now. Human bodies do not produce fuming substances. None.

"Nina, are you okay?" the boy's voice filled the silence.

I nodded.

"We should find Maggie. I thought I saw her leave the room. She didn't look very good," I explained.

The girl hadn't been herself for the last few days. To be completely honest, I thought she wouldn't be able to come to the prom. For this reason, it surprised me when I saw her outside today, acting exactly like my friend. I breathed a sigh of relief for a moment. However, what I saw... I really hoped it was just an excess of alcohol in the blood.

"We'll look for her, but only together. I'm not going to leave you alone. You're very pale. Sure you're fine?" He looked worried.

I smiled as I studied his face in the dimly lit hallway. I forgot everything I saw for a moment, focusing entirely on the boy. My heart was racing, and then there was a pleasant warmth in my stomach. He had that kind of effect on me. In a black suit with a crown glistening in the dark, he looked really wonderful. The gold that adorned his head was an addition to the title of King of the Ball, won less than a couple minutes ago. Plus, it stood out nicely against the black hair. The brown eyes looked at me lovingly. His cheekbones were heavily defined which, together with the sharp line of his jaw, made him look more serious. He was a few inches taller than me, so I had to cock my head a little to look him in the eye. For a moment I wanted to suggest that we go back to the rooms and let Maggie take care of herself, but in the end a good friend in me won.

"Let's make sure she's okay and then let's go to your place," I replied.

He smiled and then kissed me gently before we started walking down the hall together in search of the missing girl. I was smiling like an idiot at the little tenderness he offered me. We walked through corridors, the silence only interrupted by the sound of our footsteps. We had just reached the overpass connecting the sports part of the school with the one dedicated to learning, when I noticed a figure standing on the pitch. Josh noticed her too. Except for a few street lamps near the school, the rest of the world was dark, but I only needed a body shape to recognize Maggie.

"What is she doing there?" I asked, though I suspected Josh had no idea either.

"The back exit will probably be closed. We have to go to the main one." He replied immediately, focusing on specific activities.

I agreed with him. We both spent so many hours in this building that we almost blindly found the main door. The night was cool, though spring was beginning to make itself felt. I wished I had picked up my coat as I started shivering. Luckily Josh was a gentleman and he wrapped his jacket around my frozen shoulders. I got dressed, thanking him with a beautiful smile. His scent immediately attacked my senses - expensive perfume (a gift from me) and mint. It soothed my strained nerves a little. We passed a group of guys smoking cigarettes. When they noticed the direction we were heading in, they started whistling and cheering loudly.

"Do not pay attention to them," my boyfriend whispered.

Until he spoke I didn't realize what they thought about us. A strong blush crept up my cheeks. I looked at him, but he just smiled apologetically.

"Later," I promised.

His smile stopped being so innocent. My blood sped up, and a pleasant warmth spilled over all of its corners. We took a sharp turn into a parking lot filled with cars.

Maggie was standing at the far end of the alley. It didn't look like she was on fire, which I took to be a good sign. The parking lot was quite dark, but two lanterns provided enough light.

"Maggie, thank god you're okay." I started walking toward her. "You have no idea how worried I was that something happened to you. What... " I broke off when I was only three feet away from her.

It was Maggie, but at the same time it wasn't. Auburn hair fell to her shoulders, her eyes still dark brown, a delicate navy blue silk dress hugging her body, but her skin ... God, her skin was black. Completely black. Not even the lips were standing out of the face, which made the whites of the eyes even more ghastly. She smiled revealing two rows of razor-sharp teeth with greatly enlarged and elongated fangs. Her hair flared brightly in the dark, and I jumped backwards with a choppy scream, right into the boy's arms.

"You will come with me girl." The creature certainly didn't speak like Maggie.

Her voice sounded like a thousand snakes speaking simultaneously. I shuddered. Holding Josh's, we began to retreat towards more civilized parts of school. The high school was located on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by a beautiful forest. Now the same forest seemed to be our undoing.

Even here the music rumbled loudly. I couldn't get a single word out. It was as if my mind had shut it off completely, focusing on a figure that resembled some terrible demon.

Before we could take the second step, however, the creature that might once have been my friend attacked.
