Chapter 4- Just So

My tiny, tan feet were cold against the hardwood floors of my small kitchen. The quiet ticks of the timed oven taunting me as it holds captive my banana nut muffin. My tiny hands tapped silently against the white, granite counter tops, waiting impatiently for food.

Twenty fucking more minutes until it's cooked.

I exited the kitchen and headed to my enormous living room, down to the brown, cushioned couch. It was a comfy couch, yet I never seem to like it. I despised the way it would sink like quick sand once you sat. So, I grabbed one of the red, fluffy pillows and plopped it down the white carpet. I opened my MacBook Air and laid it against the wooden table. From there, I proceeded to go to the online school, where I had my teacher, Ms. Grucker tell me how to find the variable in an inscribed angle.

If I didn't die because of my disease, it would be because of this dull lesson I'm receiving. I was finally saved by the sound of ringing bells from the kitchen, alarming me that my dessert is ready. Ever so slowly, I went back to the kitchen to retrieve my meal. I drop the scorching platter as soon as a I touch it. It skitters over the hot oven lid and falls to the ground.

"Fuck!" I curse.

The moment I utter those words, my dad descends down from the stairs.

"What happened?" he asked.

"Nothing, Dad. Just dropped my banana nut muffin" I squint at the toppled dessert, which was now covered in dirt. "Great. I can no longer eat it"

"That's okay, sweetie", my dad said as she cleans up the mess, "We'll just get something else"

"No, Dad. Don't waste money. That was a lost cause. I have to go back to Ms. Grucker"

"Okay. Don't worry. I'll clean up"

"Thanks, Daddy"

I spent the next agonizing thirty five minutes pretending to know math equations and secant lines and how to find X. When it was finally over, I went out in the backyard, my safe haven. I felt the damp, soft grass against my feet. I wiggled my toes and I laid down against my back. I extended my arms and closed my eyes. It was transcendent. The tranquility of the moment overwhelmed me.

When I opened my brown eyes, I was met with huge blue ones. Matthew.

"Hey there, beauty" he whispered as he swiped his index finger on my nose.

A wide, beaming smile flirted across my face. Matthew leans down to kiss, only to be met with my hand against his cute face.

"What's happening?" he mumbles against palm.

I laugh, "I'm not going to let you kiss me. Not yet anyways"

"Damn. What have I done?"

"Ask me out"

"What"

"Ask. Me. Out" I emphasize.

His face was a mix of wonder, confusion, and gentleness.

"What does that mean?"

"I mean, you didn't really ask me out. It was more of an arranged meeting"

"You're right, but I did kiss you"

I laughed at his puzzled face "Yes, you did kiss me. It was nice. But you were also rude to me. And I'm not just going to fall at your feet and worship you just because you kissed me. I'm not so desperate to get some action that I would disregard your actions beforehand.  I mean, how do I know that you just wanted to score and not really care about me. I liked the things that happened last week but it also felt a bit rushed. One minute you hated me and the next you liked me. It was weird that you suddenly wanted to do right by me. You got to admit, that was a complete 180. Plus, I may be a bit of a loner but I would never just launch myself at you"

"What are you saying?"

"All I'm trying to say is that I want to get to know you a little bit more. Maybe go on a date"

"Okay. I could provide that but I would never just use you for kicks" his tone harsh.

"Alright. I'm sorry. I never meant to wound you. Or to insinuate that you were a cold person who toys with someone for their own sexual pleasures. Its just that I don't know you that well. And I don't want to be hurt. It was just a bizarre thing that happened, but I really do like you."

"I know where you're coming from. I do. But do you honestly think so low of me as to do that to you?"

"I think that I don't know you at all to judge you that way. Which is why I am asking you out right now. Do you want to go on a date with me? I know I asked you to ask me, but I'll just do it myself. Do you want to go on a date with me? Please" I gently smile.

He sighs and rolls his eyes. "Okay. I accept. Just so you could get this horrid notion out of your head that I would hurt you for fun"

"Thank you" I sincerely say.
