I can't say unpacking the van and moving truck was easy, but it was fun, and getting my muscles moving felt good.
"Is that your last box?" Dad wiped sweat from his brow with the back of his hand. "Yeah." I replied, carrying a kitchen box from the truck. I heard my dad strain picking the box up, "What is in here, Eden?"
"Books." I smiled, walking up to the house.
"Of course it is," he replied in a 'duh' manner.A few hours passed, and we were down to six boxes. All belonging to my dad's office, which was just one of the spare bedrooms.
I had my hair thrown into a messy bun; I wore high-waisted bleached jean shorts and a black tank top crop.
It's late summer so we still get warm days, and today was 78 degrees fahrenheit and sunny. I'll be wearing shorts while I can, thank you very much.
I was picking up a medium-sized box when a group of teenagers stopped at our driveway on their walk. I smiled, glancing between the two girls and two boys. "Hi," I waved, not letting go of the box.
"Hey," the taller of the boys said. He had wavy blond hair cut shorter at the sides and a fit build. "I'm Austen Crowe," I set the box down and shook hands "Hi, I'm Eden Ives."
"So, you just moved here?" obviously.
"Yeah, we bought the place."
"Oh, okay. I wasn't sure if you guys were seasonal residents." He glanced down at my breasts, hips, and the sliver of skin that showed beneath my crop.I cocked an eyebrow at him. He smirked and looked away, embarrassed, rubbing the back of his neck as he stepped aside for his friends.
"Hi, I'm Lillian Bauer." a very energetic, sandy-haired girl smiled at me. She was very tall, taller than the two boys with her. "I live two houses down." She pointed left to a dark green house with red window frames. It reminded me of Christmas. "Nice to meet you," I extended my hand, which she gladly took.
Next came a boy with tight brown curls and carob skin, "I'm Evelyn White," (pronounced Eev-lin)
"Eden. Nice to meet you.""And I," a girl with bobbed, straight raven black hair stepped forward, "am Emily White." She was the shortest of us all. Her bright red lipstick popped against her pale skin, and her figure was curvy but petite. "I'm his sister," she loosely gestured toward Evelyn.
"And do you two live in this part of the neighborhood, too?" I asked, slipping my hands in my back pockets. "No, a few streets down." Evelyn nodded in the general direction of their home.
"And what about you?" I asked Austen,
"Well, I live in an apartment building in town."
"I didn't spot any bigger, apartment looking buildings when we drove through. Where is it?" "Well, it's an old motel, really." I nodded my head, making an 'ah' sound. My dad came out just then "Hey-" he was going to ask me something but spotted the kids I was talking to, "Hey," he said again in a more cheerful, 'greetings' way. He walked down and shook each of their hands. "I'm Robert Ives."
They each, inturn, introduced themselves. "Well," Austen swung his hands back and forth at his side, "we better get going and let you guys finish." He took a few steps backward.
"Oh, and Eden," Emily ran to me and held my hands in hers, "this weekend we're going to the beach after ice cream, you should join us!" We both glanced back at my dad who just shrugged, I nodded, "Okay. Here, let's exchange numbers so you can give me the deets." We pulled our phones out at the same time and shared our numbers.
"Okay," she slipped her phone back in her pocket, "see you then," she smiled warmly. "Bye, Mr. Ives." She waved at my dad. They all waved their goodbyes and continued on their walk.
