When I finally reached Jordan and Trevor, I didn't take a seat in the chair nearest them, but I stood beside the studded leather chair and looked at the cushion on the ground beside the loveseat where Jordan sat.
Who was that cushion for? Me?
My brows knit and I forced myself to sit in the chair, leaving my coat in my lap with the hope that the dark fabric would hide my erection from view.
"How good of you to join us," Trevor spoke, eyes glinting with glee. He had one of those voices that you wanted to hear more of. It wasn't sexual, but his voice was soothing and calming and from the way he spoke those banal words alone I understood why Jordan was with him. "So, you're Jordan's cousin," his smile widened as he looked me over from head to toe.
Trevor was older than we were by around ten years, and his hair was a color somewhere between umber and wheat. The dirty blonde locks waved to his shoulders though considerably tamer than mine. His face also had a certain sharpness to it that Jordan's also had, they favored and I couldn't help but wonder if that was why they were together. I'd been silent too long and Trevor twitched his head to the side to emphasize that I needed to speak.
"I'm sorry, I'm being rude." I laughed nervously and sighed shaking my head. "Yes, I'm Maxime."
"Maxime," he said my name slowly and there was certain darkness to it that made me swallow. "Are you acquainted with Lucien?"
I shook my head. "I don't know any Lucien's." It was around then that I realized Jordan hadn't spoken yet. "My parents died in a car accident when I was ten, my connection to my French relations ended with that." I sighed and glanced around.
"And what do you do for a living?" His smile returned and I wrapped my arms around myself before shifting in the chair. Can Jordan not speak yet? Is that their arrangement?
I wet my lips and sighed. "I am Sadie Collier's personal Assistant, before that I worked in the mailroom at Lomond and Lindholm Press." The moment I said Sadie's name his face lit up and he grinned.
"The little minx is in the city and didn't tell me," He sighed and glanced over to where Aidan Emery sat and made a small face. "Well, I'll leave the two of you to chat while I bother my friend. It was lovely to meet you, Maxime." Trevor stood and buttoned his dark jacket before walking across the room to Aidan Emery. Seated beside Aidan Emery on one of those cushions was none other than his assistant, and I'd never seen someone look so utterly sophisticated and poised in such an erotic setting. Secretly, I coveted that sense of being owned she exuded with every gesture. Prior to the events from before, I didn't realize it was what I craved but now it seemed so clear. I wanted to kneel and worship at Sadie's feet the same as Natalia did Aidan Emery.
"Sorry about that, he was insistent," Jordan finally spoke, breaking my trances as he leaned back in the chair looking every bit the modern version of a Regency rake. He smirked a little. "For some reason, he thinks you're connected to Lucien DesLaurent and wouldn't take my word for it otherwise." Jordan sat up a bit as a waiter in a black domino mask brought two drinks to us.
"Complements of Mr. M, he expects you both to drink until the glasses stop," the man said as he set one down in front of each of us, then he left and all I could do was stare down at the artisanal drink—which was a gin and tonic going by its smell.
"What is this place?" I asked and Jordan wet his lips looking around.
"A private club," Jordan answered as he took a sip of his drink. "He knows I hate gin," he muttered under his breath. Unlike Jordan I liked gin and I loved gin and tonic... my brows knit, and I suddenly felt like I wasn't being told something. Then I half recalled stumbling home drunk from the pub at the end of my freshman year and finding the door to Jordan's room cracked open as a woman tied him to his bed. We discussed it once after that, it was the first time I'd heard the term submissive used in a sexual context.
