A warm breeze brings the smell of flowers, grass, and summertime to me. I open my eyes to find myself in the courtyard, laying propped up against one of the tall apple trees. I yawn and stretch, not remembering falling asleep out here. I look up and count as many of the crimson apples I can. I get interrupted by a mew as a little yellow kitten with orange stripes rubs against me, my kitten. I pull her up into my lap, her motor is running and she licks me with her sand-paper tongue. I giggle, petting her carefully so it doesn't anger her. She looks up to me, her green eyes shining brighter than the sun. I grin, knowing that we match, her with her golden coat and me with my yellow sun dress.
A muffled voice calls out suddenly, scaring my kitten and making her jump from my lap. She starts running off toward the opening leading out to the village. I jump up and chase after her, not wanting her to go yet. Another muffled noise calls behind me and something catches me by the shoulder, pulling me backwards. I stumble but I don't let my eyes falter from my kitten. She continue to run until she is almost to the dirt paved road.
Out of nowhere a large, brindle dog runs and snatches my kitten up in its strong jaws. It runs a little further before stopping and violently shaking its head, my kitten twisting and contorting with each turn. A sickening pop sends shivers down my spine and I cry out. Whoever has caught me is trying to talk to me but all I can do it watch the evil dog drop my kitten to the ground. Tears stream down my face as I run straight for the dog, screaming at it. It eyes me shortly before heading back in the direction it came from. My kitten lays broken and drool stained on the ground., its once joyful green eyes dull and full of fear.
My tears fall onto her, the individual drops getting stuck in her plush fur. "Ellie." I turn and see Mister Lemming, his eyes watching me tauntingly. At his side sits the brindle dog, malice in its eyes, nearly matching the look its owner had. I turn and bury my face into the person beside me, the one who followed me from the tree. "Ellie." Strong arms hold me tight and smooth my hair. Now I was alone, not matching anything but the burning sun way up in the sky. Like it, I was all alone, no one to play with anymore, no one to kiss and pet and love. My heart sinks deeper and my crying increases. "Ellie please.."
I throw myself up in bed, breathing heavily. Grant and Savvy are next to me, anxiety etched into their faces. "Ellie are you okay? We heard you scream out and when we came up you were crying. Are you in pain? Is it your head again or is something else hurting?" My heart beats a million times per second. What was that, some sort of sadistic dream? No, it couldn't have been, it felt too real, too exact. I wipe my face and feel fresh tears on my check and sweat coating my body. No, there is no way a dream could make me react like that. I turn, both of them still intently waiting for my reply.
"What.. Oh no I'm okay. I just had a terrible nightmare. But my head does ache a little." Savvy mutters something then hurries down the stairs and out of sight. Grant pulls up a chair next to the bed and stares at me with fear.
"Look, Ellie, is there anything you need to talk about? I'm really concerned for you and I want you to know that you can trust me. I won't tell Savvy or your parents or anyone, okay? So please, if anything is going on tell me." His voice is hushed and he says the words with a fierce voice.
"Grant, if I knew what was going on I would be letting you know, but I don't and I'm trying to figure it all out myself. I'm probably just hungry, I haven't eaten in a while, I don't know. Look it's nothing to worry about okay?" He doesn't press me anymore but I can see that he doesn't believe me. I don't even know if I believe myself. Maybe Lemming poisoned that nasty tea, or used some weird drug instead of Chai leaves. I could see him doing something stupid like that.
