Goku thought that the power that gotan displayed was enough power for him to join the Z fighters.
Although Goku took him to meet him the people he met for the reason of joining the Z fighters, he would do it anyway sooner or later.

While Gotan was doing his daily training with Goku, Gohan went up to them and announced that the Budokai Tournament was officially anounced.
Goku couldn't believe it. His last participation was decades ago for the reason that it never happened again.
A tournament happening now after more than 20 years was kind of odd.
But all the Z fighters would go anyways
