(Y/N) immidiately knew that something wasn't right. The 6th year at Hogwarts had started like every other. Friends were finally, after a long break, reunited; schoolwork already started to pile up, as the professors began their relentless preparation for the exams at the end of the year; the new students discovered Hogwarts, while the older ones spend their time in Hogsmeade or at the lake to savour the last few weeks of summer, before autumn would break in and bring cold and rainy days; the Quidditch Season began with an amazing game Slytherin against Hufflepuff (Slytherin of course won) and everything could have been perfect. If (Y/N) hadn't known that something was wrong with Draco.
They had been friends since they were little children, both being of pureblooded descend. Their parents had studied together at Hogwarts and had been friends, so it was no question, if their children would be friends as well. When Draco and (Y/N) had both been chosen for Slytherin, their parents' house, they had been elated. For six years now they had spent every free minute together, learning and laughing, enjoying their time at Hogwarts. Of course, Hogwarts had changed with the upcoming war and knowing that their parents were all loyal servants of the Dark Lord had worried them, but up until the start of that year nothing between them had changed. They were still Draco and (Y/N), best friends since childhood, no secrets between them, nothing could break them apart...or at least that's what (Y/N) thought.
Starting the 6thyear had proven her wrong on so many things. It all began with the trainride over to Hogwarts. As always, (Y/N) had been one of the first to board the train and as always she had saved seats for Draco and his friends. She didn't like most of them, except maybe for Blaise, but Draco liked them, so she didn't say anything. First to arrive was, to no surprise, Blaise Zabini. They talked about their vacation until Pansy came and then focused their conversation on the next year. Crabbe and Goyle arrived next, which was weird, because normally, Draco was with them. This time he was nowhere to be seen, which worried (Y/N). He was never late. That was part of his upringing. A look at the clock outside at the station showed her, that Draco was cutting it awfully close. With every passing minute (Y/N) got more nervous, watching the clock and the entrance to the departement alternately.
The conductor blew his whistle, the doors of the train rattled shut and the engine rumbled out of the station... and Draco was still not there.
„I'm going to-", before (Y/N) could finish that sentence the door to their compartement flew open and Draco stamped in. He trudged over to them and let himself fall on his place with a small huff. She immidiately saw how tired he looked. He was a lot paler than usual, which only made the bags under his eyes darker and more prominent. He looked as though he hadn't slept in a while.
„We already thought you wouldn't make it.", Blaise laughed, clasping his friends shoulder.
Draco shrugged: „My parents were relentless. They wouldn't let me go until the very end."
„At least you're here now.", (Y/N) said, all her worry melting away at the sound of his voice.
She smiled at him, but Draco didn't smile back. He only averted his eyes with a grunt and that's how she knew something was wrong.

The next weeks flew by in a blur of stress and worry. School was a lot. Even though as 6th graders they had more freetime during the day, most of that time was spent on homework and learning, as the teachers had no mercy on their students. Next to all that, (Y/N) had nearly no time to do something about Dracos weird behaviour, which didn't mean that she wasn't constantly worried about him. He snuck around a lot more than usual; was quiet, which didn't fit his character at all; was late to almost every lesson and after gone before (Y/N) could get a word in with him. She hardly saw him all day and he only came back to the commonroom late at night, when the students should already be in bed for hours. With every day he looked more tired, more agitated, more stressed, less the Draco she knew. She tried to talk to him multiple times, but he blocked it off, always giving another excuse as why he couldn't talk to her at the moment, why he was avoiding her all the time. Once it was school, another time his parents and then a secret girlfriend, which probably hurt her the most. (Y/N) knew that he was lying, of course. She had grown up with him and knew him better than anyone else. She knew how to tell he was lying, she knew how to tell that something was wrong, she knew everything about him and that's why it hurt so much more that he just wouldn't tell her what was going on now.
So, hurt and angry with him, she decided to just ignore this nagging feeling and also to ignore him in general. If he wanted to be alone, so be it.
That is until one night,  Draco came back to the common room later than usual, white shirt cut to pieces and soaked with blood.(Y/N) had been studying, trying to catch up in Defense against theDark Arts, and had not even noticed how much time had passed.Everyone else had already gone to bed when Draco stumbled in and stopped in his tracks as his eyes met the (E/C) orbs of his best friend.
She was with him in a second, nearly hysteric over the state he was in. Her hands roamed only inches over his chest, not wanting to touch him, if he really was hurt, but still wanting to make sure that he wasn't.
„I'm fine.", he grumbled, grabbing her wrists, so she would finally stop fussing.
„What the hell, Draco? Have you seen yourself?!", she screamed, louder than she actually wanted to, but all the fear and anger getting the best of her.
He shrugged, avoiding her hard gaze: „I told you, I'm fine."
„Fine?! You've been sneaking around for weeks now, haven't talked to any of your friends, not even me; you've abandoned you're classes, have obviously not slept in a while and now you come back covered in blood and you're fine?! What in all the world is going on, Draco?!", the girl exploded, all the worry and fury washing over her at Dracos disinterest, making her whole body tremble and tears shoot to her eyes. Tears she couldn't hold back.
Draco didn't know what to do now. He hated seeing her like this, hated not being able to talk to her about everything that had been going on, but he just couldn't. He didn't want to get her into his mess. She was supposed to stay out of all of this, far away from the Dark Lord. She was supposed to only worry about school, not about him. Maybe she wouldn't have had to if he had just talked to her, but he knew that if he hadn't stayed away, he would have told her everything.
„I'm fine, (Y/N).", he insisted, pushing past her, not wanting to see her tears, because it would only  make all of this so much worse.
But she grabbed his arm, before he could rush upstairs and pulled him to a stop: „No, you're not, Draco. I know you. I know when you're not fine. So, stop pretending that you're ok, cause I know you're not. I just want to help you. Please."
This time he looked at her, hardening his resolve to not get her involved, to just tell her the same thing over and over again: I'm fine. But he couldn't. The moment their eyes met, he broke down. This was his best friend. They had always told each other everything and right now he needed her more than ever. So, between tears and hickups and clutching her as tightly to his chest, he told her everything.
