It'd been months. Months of the same back and forth. It was dully repetitive, almost like back at Woodbury. My brother became more acclimated, as did I, and became good friends with Carl, who still was a hot n' cold relationship with me. Most of the time, I helped Beth with Judy, or drew outside in the fields as Carl, Hershel, and Rick did farming. Other times, I would linger with Carol, helping her do dishes as she radiated a motherly energy that never failed to make me feel warm inside. Sometimes, though, I just sat with Maggie and Glenn. They'd taken me under their wing alongside Beth, and Beth had told Maggie about my nightmares, and when I would wake up, trying not to scream and scare everyone, I was now comfortable with waking up Beth to comfort me, if she hadn't already been awoken, or if it was a hard day with Judy, I would go to the cell by mine, on the opposite side of Carl's. I would gently shake Maggie, tears pouring down my face, trying not to disturb Glenn, who she was curled up with, and she would hold me. Some nights I even slept in her embrace, or with Beth in the same form. I stayed with the Woodbury residents less and less, and an outdoor eating area was constructed where everyone had communal meals. Patrick had even befriended Lizzie and Mika, playing with them and going to story time. Heck, he'd settled in here better than I had, and had even convinced Zack, Beth's boyfriend, to grab me a present for my tenth birthday on a run, surprising me with a new Nancy Drew book. Who knew if it was my birthday, but it was a hot Georgia spring, summer on the horizon, and we assumed my birthday had come and past in the swells of heat. My life felt repetitive, but comforting, and over time, event he nightmares began to fade. I jogged over to help Carol with lunch, grinning at her as she smiled back at me.
"Levi, be a dear and pass my that ladle, please."
I did, peeking into the boiling pot with a grin.
"Ah, deer stew again, huh?"
She swatted me, biting back a smile.
"You prefer canned olives? I think Maggie mentioned she put one aside just for you."
I fake gagged, face scrunching up in disgust as I glowered at her. My first, and last, experience with canned olives had not been a good one, and to this day I refused to eat them. My caretakers, however, thought it was hilarious. Besides, the deer stew Carol made was to die for, and as if on cue, my stomach rumbled. Woodbury residents began to line up, and I handed the bowls Carol filled with utensils to them, as they all thanked us. My current cellblock mates were all busy, and would probably come late. The crowd thinned, and I made grabby hands at Carol for stew, as she laughed, before handing me one, which I slurped at joyously. I spotted Daryl in the distance-he scared me a little, but in an intimidating way, I knew he would never hurt me, and liked him, even if he was gruff and a little rough around the exterior.
"Ooh, look at our resident hunter."
She laughed at his bemused expression as Woodbury residents took their time to thank him as he walked by, clearly uncomfortable as he took a bowl from Carol, eating it with his grubby fingers. I made a face, and he snorted, reaching out as if to touch me with his soupy hands, making me shriek and duck behind Carol. I watched Patrick come up out of the corner of my eye, and groaned inwardly, he was going to revrently greet Daryl, I could see it now. As I suspected, he practically worshipped him, asking to shake his hand, and I giggled as Daryl licked off each of his fingers before slapping Patrick's hand into a tight, and probably bone-crushing, shake. He walked off, and Daryl turned, scrunitizing me.
