CHAPTER 55 – Epilogue

3 months later.

The fresh lemon scent filled up the kitchen. Scarlett had just finished washing and packing the dishes. Her hands frantically wiped the counter spotless in the kitchen. Cleaning and tidying the double story house was all she did after she came home from the bakery daily. After Roman's death, her day to day consisted of the same thing.

Wake up.

Take Tyler to school.

Work at the bakery.

Visit Roman at his grave.

Come home. Clean up and make dinner.

That was her routine. She had to keep busy or else she would fall apart. Her heart was still empty. It still ached for the love of her life. The throb melting into a dull ache. She hadn't realized how hard she had fallen for Roman. A life with him was stolen from her.

She missed him... especially at night.

She sighed as she folded up the kitchen towels. Her mind wondered... drifting her eyes to the garden outside as memories clouded her. She gazed at the blooming rose bushes. And it suddenly hit her. Her eyes grew wide with Roman's words echoing back to her that she had promised to him. She dropped the kitchen towel and dashed outside through the back kitchen door.

She grabbed a small shovel that stood close to the terrace and marched to the three rose bushes. She scanned the red roses that was striking and in full bloom. Her heart skipped and the crimson reminded her of Roman. She placed the small shove in both hands and dug up the soil gently. Careful not to disturb the bountiful shrub.

She suddenly hit something solid. Her hands knocked it three times with a shovel to confirm. Her heart pounded and butterflies formed in her belly. It was like Roman came to visit, bringing her a message or gift.

She pulled out a small wooden chest from the sandy ground. Her hands dusted the dirt from it before she opened. She peeked inside with an anxious heart.

A black small velvet pouch laid with an envelope. She took it out and breathed in and out deep, closing her eyes. This was Roman's final words to her. She opened the letter with shaky fingers.

Dear Scarlett,

If you are reading this. That means something had happened to me. My enemies succeeded in my demise.

Writing this wasn't easy, but it was necessary. Everything works out the way it should be. Maybe it would be better this way? You'll be safer. You wouldn't have to look over your shoulder every day, like I have to or shift your whole life for me to escape mine.

There is a black pouch inside the wooden chest. keep it secret and keep it safe. These diamonds were an investment and I want you to have them. I wouldn't do any good with them and I gladly pass them to your care to do what you will. Its security for your future and for Tyler's.

I hope Tyler grows up good and strong. Keep him away from the mob life. It brings nothing but pain and troubles. Let him learn from his father and I and become a better man.

My only regret is not living life with you and growing old together.

Be happy, Scarlett.

I love you and thank you for loving me in return.

With all my love,

Roman

Scarlett closed her eyes and broke down, falling to her knees on the lawn. Her heart was crying again but was filled with love and happiness. Roman saved her life. He helped her time and time again. He protected her. He had given her love and made sure she was financially stable, even in his death. Warm tears of affection streamed down and love in her heart grew at his kindness. She was so wrong about Roman in the beginning... so very wrong. They had come a long way since the days in the pub when she first met him. A day she had replayed over and over again in her mind.

Her hands clutched the pouch and placed the diamonds against her chest. Breathing and thinking about their love. These precious tiny rocks represented it. Small arms wrapped around her neck. Tyler came up from behind to hug his mother.

"Are you okay, Mom?" He asked. "You're digging up the rose bush?"

Scarlett giggled and wiped away her tears. "I'm okay, Tyler." She sniffed and laughed. "We're going to be okay."

She stood up and wiped her skirt clean and hugged her son tight. She walked back to the kitchen with her son running ahead.

She had Roman's heart and he had hers. He had thought about her, and it warmed her heart. It was going to be a struggle to move on. But she knew his comforting words and thoughts will keep her moving forward. She would always have her beautiful memories with the man she loved.

Scarlett was the spark of light in Roman's dark world.

The fire in his heart!

The flame that lit his grey eyes.
