to sunshine boy:
who wears the sky like a casual tee
laughs airily with the stars
and smiles as if he were the Sun,

do you count the hearts you're given?

YOU hear Mitsuri Kanroji before you see her, soprano voice ringing out in the semi-empty classroom before she can even make it within visible distance of the room (a talent which you still envy to this day).

She walks in with a dark-haired male, one you recognize to be Iguro Obanai, her rather reticent boyfriend. The two walk over to where you sit by the window, hand-in-hand, and take to occupying adjacent tables, leaving you to remain unbothered by this; as with the many times before.

"Y/n-san, I was looking for you!" Mitsuri lets out a huff, the curve of her lips moving to form a pout.

Knowing your dear friend, you offer a sheepish smile in response, dragging out the syllables in your apology to further express the remorse you held for not looking for her at the beginning of lunch hour. "I brought spam and onigiri, forgive me?"

Rolling her eyes playfully, the pink-hued girl lets out a satisfied 'hmph' after taking her respectively-colored bento. Bringing lunch for the three of you was an everyday occurrence, a habit which you hadn't found the interest in breaking and it seemed neither did they.

"Thank you, Yoshikage-san," Obanai replies quietly, accepting the green bento which you had offered him. You nod, a smile gracing your lips as you watch the couple begin to eat first before opening your own.

Just as your neatly shaped riceball, there's a rather large cacophony at the door of the classroom, bright orange hair flashing in view as a particular group of boys enter the room. You recognize him to be Rengoku Kyoguro, the darker, more subtle figure next to him Tomioka Giyuu.

You let out a less-than-audible sigh, watching silently as the two continue their conversation (conversation meaning Kyojuro talking to Giyuu) without so much as paying an ounce of attention to the few admirers who had taken the responsibility of squealing at the doorway.

"Ne, Y/n-san," Mitsuri starts, taking a bit of her onigiri. Her gaze shifts to the boy in question before turning to her friend. "Did you put the note in his locker?"

You offer no response, opting for a sip of your tea and continuing to eat your lunch. "You did, didn't you?!"

"Mitsuri, my love, I don't believe it is Yoshikage-san's intent to share her role as a secret admirer to the whole class," Obbanai suggests, nodding when you send him a silent 'thank you' with your eyes. "Lower your voice a little, lovely."

The pink-haired girl lets out a hmph but decreases her volume nonetheless. "Well anyway, have you found a partner for the project ye—Rengoku-san! How are you?"

Panic turns the blood in your veins cold and you stop mid-bite into your onigiri when you notice that the one male you could not coherently function in front of was taking a seat next to you. "I'm well, it's nice to see you, Kanroji-san. You too Obbanai-san," he greets before turning to you (who is currently trying not to choke on rice). "Yoshikage Y/n, right?"

You cough, reaching for your tea to take a sip before clearing your throat (you were a mess). "Y-yes, hi," you reply shyly, gaze averted to your lunch rather than him.

"Well, I hope I wasn't interrupting anything too important," he chuckles nervously, eyes closed in an apologetic smile.

Mitsuri follows up quickly, waving a dismissive hand. "Nothing like that! We were just discussing project partners for the classical writing exchange," she informs, an innocent smile forming on her lips. "Y/n-san here doesn't have a partner yet, so we were going through the rounds to see if there was anyone suited enough to work with her."

Your voice is low, a quiet warning, "Mitsuri..."

Rengoku considers this, evidently not hearing you address your best friend. "Oh, well neither do I, since Giyuu-san is working with someone else."

Mitsuri giggles, giggles. (You deem her to be an evil creature.) "Then I guess it's settled! How about the two of you work together?"

Even after the orange-haired male leaves, you're still not sure whether to stay mad at her or thank her.
