[This is part of the story - the prologue is in the narrator's voice]
If you are reading this, all events in this record have come to pass. By now, it is already too late. There is no saving us. But a wise woman once told me 'We were not born to be immortal, child; it is only in memory that we may catch a glimpse at eternity.' Perhaps this is an ill-fated plea. It is unlikely anyone will ever find this, let alone read it. I suppose it is humanity's curse to hope.
Everyone wants to be remembered.
I always knew my fate would not be a kind one, because I never deserved one. Know this, reader, I did not write this story for me. I do not deserve to be remembered, for I can never wash the blood off my hands. But he deserves a soft epilogue; I owe him that much. Through this book I will etch my memory of him into legend, so that someday, in a kinder world, he can live the life he never got to live.
Be kind, reader, if you choose to read on. There is no such thing as good people. Not in this world.
