"Leadership, hard work ethics, pride, responsibility, all these that are lacked by me, mom, I want to better myself. I don't know why, and I don't know how I am going to do it, but I am going to be a Navy SEAL. Before you say anything mom and dad, I want you to know that I will be safe, and I will be taught well. My strengths will be better than I could ever achieve. Many great men have served for this great nation, and I want to be great like those men." As 18 year old Shaun McFolder gave this speech to his parents, he could see the devastation in their eyes. As you could expect, parents with only one child would be quite protective. Shaun, a senior with long black hair, and eyes the color of blue diamonds, comforted his mother telling her that everything is going to be okay. Shaun glances over to his father, a tall man, wearing a suit and glasses, that had the same nose as Shaun with brown eyes, joined the hug to Shaun's mother saying that he thinks it would not be a bad idea, after all, David himself, Shaun's father, was in the Airforce as a pilot. Now that David is retired, he owns a growing business, that he was just leaving the house for a meeting. Shaun's mother, a short lady, with glasses and the nicest smile you could ever see, looked at her husband, with the same eyes as Shaun, and said, "David, you know how worried I was with you in the military, I can't let Shaun go too, that's where the grey hairs came from" as she groomed her golden blonde hair. David now leaving the house with Shaun and his mother standing at the bottom of the steps next to the leather sofa with the TV on but no volume, waving goodbye. Shaun and Debbie, Shaun's mother, sit there in awkward silence, until Shaun decides he would take a shower. When he gets out, he walks down the cold wooden steps, his bare feet, now freezing, find his mother in the kitchen, her natural habitat. She was only drinking coffee, but usually when Shaun walked down the staircase, he could smell the sweet aroma of cookies or cakes, which would make his mouth water just thinking about it. As he stood there, he watched his mother, he seen how she was trying to calm her nerves. He walks so gradually next to her, as his feet still freezing, then he gives her a long hug without saying any words. They stand there, hugging, for a while and Debbie finally looks at Shaun and says, "Shaun, dear... " as she broke off, Shaun knowing what she was going to say, " listen, honey. If this is what you really want...then I'll support you. " Shaun's face now in shock, he was expecting to be yelled at, but no. Debbie finishes her coffee and goes to bed. Before Shaun went up the cold dark stairs to his room, he looked at the old wooden that David got from his father, it said, 8:36. For Shaun it was kinda early, but he decided to go to sleep anyways. He decided that he would go to running in the morning. 10:00 struck on Shaun's alarm clock and he heard his fathers truck door slam, then to the front door. Shaun went out his room, which was actually kinda big, he had a queen size bed, with a green blanket, next to a dresser with a lamp in front of his flat screen TV. As he exits the room he meets his father at the top of the stairs and says, "sorry about mom... " he pauses, " will you wake me up when you go to work so I can run? Good way to spend a Saturday huh." His father agrees and tiredly walks to his room. The next morning, David wakes up Shaun. Shaun, in his underwear almost fell as he was getting up, he opened up the dresser, where he pulled out his Nike shorts and under armor long sleeve shirt. He wears his old Nike shoes, known as his "running shoes" and leaves the house feeling the cold wind on his legs. Here in the small town of Clarry, Georgia. There is only 1000 people overall, it's a small town, rumors spread as fast as the forest fires. Shaun, living in a small subdivision, starts his run the usual way by starting toward the woods and working his was around the town, but something... New... Something different. Something he never felt when he was alone.. Has...someone was watching him. Shaun looks back insensibly, and sees a man in a trench coat and Fedora. He studies the man, for a second he started for him, but he realized that the man was waiting at the bus stop. Shaun turns around relieved and continues his run. Shaun, a student-athlete, A' honor student, taking AP classes, was the top of the state in football. He played running back, Shaun was a tall man himself, and he was big, not fat but muscle. Shaun was a person you'd want on your side in a fight, but Shaun was very easy to get along with. He is awkward, and weird, kinda like another species... But anyways, Shaun was prepared for anything the United States Navy could throw at him, he thought. When Shaun makes it home, he Loos at the clock and notices it's 12:30, which he left at 4:00. I guess time flies when you stop the lake and talk to 'uncle Luke', but he's everyone's 'uncle'. If there is one thing you should know about that man, is he loves to talk. He always wears overalls with no shirt and this old hat that was camouflage at a time. Shaun now in his room, as he crept up the stairs, sneaking past his parents as he didn't want to see the sadness of his mother. Shaun spends the rest of his Saturday watching TV and at the house until his mother made him drive to the store and get bread and milk. Shaun notices that old wooden clock again and sees it's 10:32, and now is ready for bed. He creeps up the wooden steps and drifts to sleep.
Shaun is woken, at 3:00, by a dream he had... These creatures... Chasing him... What were they... They had red eyes... He tries to remember more, but is to sleepy and falls asleep again. He is awoken again at 9:30 by his mother though, ready for church. Shaun moans as he8 is tired, and he still in his underwear, now getting ready.
Shaun arrives at the old white church, it was a Baptist and Shaun dreaded going, even though he was a believer. Maybe it was the preacher he thought, maybe the music. Shaun tried not to think to much about it.
Now that Shaun was home, he could smell his mother's cooking of chicken and cake. The smell brought memories to him of him as a child, Shaun thinks about how he use to be a 'sumo' baby and eat as much cake as he could.
That night, Shaun is in bed, not quite asleep, but just thinking about his decision about his career. He thought about how sad and proud his mother would be, how his dad would see him, how much better his life would be. Then, his eyes become heavy, and he drifts to sleep.
That night, he had the weird dream again, not remembering their appearance, but he was running from them. There was a group of people with him, some people he never seen before. He falls in a small hole the size of his foot and falls. There was complete blackness and he awakes breathing heavily, looking over at his alarm clock, beside the lamp, he reads that it is 4:11 knowing that he has to get up in an hour he growls and mummers he hates school.
