Servers are the thing that makes minecraft well popular. I personally think notch tried to just make a survival game instead of "survival games" and all the other multiplayer minigames but it's what made it work. servers are just worlds people make that are public and found on the internet or from a friend or family member. now I think you have to pay for a minecraft server I'm not sure how it all works but i don't know :/ you still can do survival on servers also with minigames and others which is a bust but yeahhh...
